Welcome to the Dark House by Laurie Faria Stolarz

When I drove to Las Vegas for ALA, I was very excited for books and author events and to see my awesome Twitter friends in person.

One of the things I was most excited about was being able to talk to the editors and publicists at the publishing booths and find out which books they would recommend for horror fanatics. I feel like the YA scene has shifted a bit and we’ve finally begun to see more action in the dark YA, horror, and thriller categories.

I did this in the Disney-Hyperion booth. I asked the publicist which book she would recommend me to read for our Midnight Society blog. The publicist grinned and knew just the thing! She ducked under one of the tables and came back with this one, Welcome to the Dark House. The cover looks amazingly creepy. Kind of like a mash up between Something Wicked This Way Comes and my worst nightmare. Look at it!

About Welcome to the Dark House

What’s your worst nightmare?

For Ivy Jensen, it’s the eyes of a killer that haunt her nights. For Parker Bradley, it’s bloodthirsty sea serpents that slither in his dreams.

And for seven essay contestants, it’s their worst nightmares that win them an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at director Justin Blake’s latest, confidential project. Ivy doesn’t even like scary movies, but she’s ready to face her real-world fears. Parker’s sympathetic words and perfect smile help keep her spirits up. . . at least for now.

Not everyone is so charming, though. Horror-film fanatic Garth Vader wants to stir up trouble. It’s bad enough he has to stay in the middle of nowhere with this group—the girl who locks herself in her room; the know-it-all roommate; “Mister Sensitive”; and the one who’s too cheery for her own good. Someone has to make things interesting.

Except, things are already a little weird. The hostess is a serial-killer look-alike, the dream-stealing Nightmare Elf is lurking about, and the seventh member of the group is missing.

By the time Ivy and Parker realize what’s really at stake, it’s too late to wake up and run.

****

I’ve read almost every other book by Laurie Faria Stolarz. I think she’s a fantastic writer and writes such fantastic dark YA / thrillers. I had NO idea that she had a new novel coming out, but I’m certain that it will be a spectacular read!

You can add it to your Goodreads here.

Also, I want to applaud Disney-Hyperion for their upcoming YA thrillers and horror novels that I can’t wait to consume!

What do you guys think? Have you heard of Welcome to the Dark House? What other YA horror / thriller novels are you excited about? Let me know in the comments below!
