Keep Calm and Kill Zombies

I'm working on a series right now about zombies. Kind of. It's about an all girl pop band fighting zombies. (Check out my pinterest board, I think it's ridiculous fun!) This has me doing lots of reading about weapons (and listening to an absurd amount of pop music), so I thought I'd open up everyone's favorite debate... What would be your weapon of choice for zombie slaying? Are you someone who wants something up close and sharp? Blunt? Something you can use from far away? What do you think will increase your odds? You can take more than one, but my ultimate tra[...]

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Anya

As I write this blog post, I'm again watching a Buffy episode. This totally normal and not out of character for me, but it definitely got me thinking. In each Buffy episode, there is a new kind of evil in Sunnydale. Many of the main characters have at one time allowed their evil side to shine through: Spike, Angel, Willow, and Anya just to name a few. Nothing beats a good ol' Vengeance Demon!   GIF Credit: http://www.snarksquad.com/2013/12/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-s07-e05-sometimes-it-bes-that-way.html Formally known as Aud of Sweden, Anya becomes a Ven[...]

The Glass Casket, a Gothic Horror tale

As 2015 begins, I can’t help but reflect on my favorite books of 2014. Probably one of the most influential was The Glass Casket by McCormick Templeman, a Gothic Horror wrapped very neatly inside the structure of a fairy tale. Like most Gothics, the story is set in an exotic place. Though we don't have the Gothic castle, we do have the snowy and isolated village of Nag’s End where our heroine, Rowan Rose, lives with her father, Henry Rose, and their maid, Emily. On the opening page, death has come to Nag’s End, when some strange beast attacks a group of sold[...]

WIP Playlist

I've been working (not as quickly as I'd like) on my second installment of short stories. Titled Tragic Tales of Strange Girls, Volume 2, the stories are about exactly what you'd think: unhappy stories with odd female characters. I write horror, but less blood and guts and more pretty, unsettling creepiness. Okay, who am I kidding... there is a nice amount of blood and guts, too. But, with this first song in particular, you may listen and scratch your head like "Um, how is this supposed to sound scary?" As the lyrics suggest, I'm writing a character who is in the[...]

The Werewolf Curse of Argentina

Argentinians take their folklore seriously. And rightfully they should. According to legend, the seventh son born to a family is cursed to become a werewolf who feasts on the bodies of unbaptized babies. Yep. I'd take that pretty seriously too. But they take things to a whole 'nother level in Argentina. In fact, their president gets involved. In order to thwart the curse, there is a long-standing tradition where the leader of the country legally adopts any seventh born son. This way, the son is no longer technically part of their original family, and no longer co[...]

NA Horror- Let’s Get this Started!

I never set out to write a New Adult story. What I did set out to write was your good old fashion YA horror, one that I've submitted into many contests and to many agents. It was during one of these contests that I had my first "ah-ha" moment when an author came to me and said that my story really fit better in the New Adult category. The second eye opening moment came from an agent I had queried. Needless to say, she was sending me a rejection but noted that really my story was not meant to be labeled as young adult. New Adult Since I had these two experiences,[...]

Midnight Book Club: Creed

Back in October, Amy interviewed the authors of Creed, Lindsay Currie and Trisha Leaver. I'm curious who's read since then, and if you haven't yet (like me), we can discuss it this month. I've also made some reading resolutions this year (maybe you have too), so this will help with accountability. Fun, right? Here's a synopsis: Three went in. Three came out. None even a shadow of who they once were. When their car breaks down, Dee, her boyfriend Luke, and his brother Mike walk through a winter storm to take refuge in a nearby town called Purity Springs. When th[...]
