THE THING: A Review

Photo courtesy of IMDB I am and forever will be an 80's girl. Between the clothes, the music, and the movies we had it all. We also had...THE THING! Just like every other 80's movie, THE THING begins with rolling credits and cheesy music. And a flying UFO. Lol! THE THING takes place in Antarctica, winter 1982. There are American and a Norwegian camps who are there to explore. The poor Norwegians think they've made the greatest discovery--a UFO. Little do they know, this will be the death of them all. Leave it to the American crew--lead by helicopter pilot, Mac[...]

Reclaim Horror: Bates Motel

Bates Motel is my favorite show on television, and it just returned for its third season last week. The first 20 episodes are on Netflix right now, so get caught up and join the club. According to IMDB, Bates Motel is a mystery/thriller. Wikipedia categorizes it as a drama/thriller. I discussed that sprawling genre, the thriller, last month. In Bates Motel, there are mysteries (where is the abducted girl?) and drama (my uncle is my dad?), but the thrills should be classified as chills. While the original book, Psycho, is considered a suspense novel, the TV show[...]

Famous Hauntings: The Bell Witch

When we discuss folklore, the stuff of legends particular to certain areas, we're not always discussing the story itself -- we talk about the hype that surrounds it; makes it bigger than it probably is. The fact is, a lot of the pop culture we get our hands on today lies roots in stories that were told a couple of centuries ago. I can't say that this suggests that there's no original horror stories anymore, far from it; it's interesting, however, that the origin points for the things we find scary now might actually have kernels of truth to them because they're so[...]

The Very First Time Frankenstein Took to the Screen

It's Wednesday, which means more talk about that classic undead, Frankenstein's monster. A few weeks ago we got started with some trivia about the book where it all began, so this week I thought we'd look at the first time this story was put to film. But it wasn't where you might believe. Edison (yeah, Thomas Edison, the light bulb guy, he did other stuff, too!) Studios made a short film for the movie in 1910, but it was called sacrilegious (as this story often was) and disappeared into the night. It didn't pop back up again until the 1950s when a private collec[...]

A Review of HORNS

From 2001-2011, Daniel Radcliffe was synonymous with the Harry Potter phenomenon. During those ten years, we watched him grow from a boy into a man—one who has since moved on to playing older characters in Rated R movies such as: The Women in Black and Horns. The movie Horns is not your typical horror movie. In fact, it’s really a thriller with some horror undertones. And who better to write the novel that was adapted for the screen, than Joe Hill. For those who don’t know who Joe Hill is, I have two words for you…Stephen King. Joe Hill has made a name f[...]

Here's a little more about them. About Kathy Palm Kathleen Palm is missing and presumed dead. Her family discovered the front door ripped from its hinges, the living room covered in blood and chocolate chips, her[...]

Cannibal Love

Hi there! My name is Kim and I'm new around here. I’m so thrilled to be a part of Midnight Society. I look forward to talking about book love, writing, and horror—since those three things are pretty much my life. For my first post, I’m going to be talking about cannibals, and why I love them, because I’m just that type of girl. (I've always been a zombie fangirl, so I figure cannibals and zombies kinda go hand-in-hand, am I right?) Now—no, before you start thinking like that I want to clarify something—I mean fictional cannibals, of course. N[...]

Thursday Scare: There’s No Such Thing…

I love spooky Youtube shorts. I can spend hours perusing for really, really good ones. If you have any favorites, I'd love for you to link them in the comments below. I found this today and figured that I wasn't the only person who needed a little creep in my week. I've also posted before about The Smiling Man. That includes a story and a video and supposedly, The Smiling Man is a true story. And well, let's just hope this one is not! Thursday Scare: There's No Such Thing Directed by Drew Daywalt What do you think? What are your favorite horror short films? T[...]
