What We Let Die Inside of Us – My Latest Horror Game Obsession

I’ve been exploring a bunker.  I need to escape to save my sister.  The computer is reporting wildlife outside, and the radio is giving instructions on what to do if I feel the urge to eat my neighbor. Before this, I explored a house with a secret.  Thunder boomed outside, and my recorder picked up music when there was no one else in the room.  And there was that thing with the spirit board. The asylum came before that.  Hawthorne Manor was immense, and I think I’d been there for a long time.  Some madman had scrawled warnings on the walls, and th[...]

Hereditary Is a Slow, Disturbing Ride

Hereditary is an interesting film that any horror fan needs to see. I think my expectations were set a little too high when people started calling it the new Exorcist. In my opinion, it's not even remotely close to The Exorcist or The Exorcist III in terms of scares or quality of storytelling. For me, Hereditary was an interesting occult tale that has more in common with The Ninth Gate than with anything it's currently being compared to. And that's actually great, because I adore The Ninth Gate, and I enjoyed Hereditary quite a bit. https://youtu.be/V6wWKNij_[...]

YA Zombie Book Round-up

There's something creepy about zombies. Sure, perhaps it's the carnal rage or unquenchable thirst for your brain. That certainly makes me prefer to never encounter one. I like my brain where it's at, thank you very much. But at the very core, I think it's deeper than that. There's something unsettling about things that should be dead, but did not stay that way. I think that's also why I love ghost stories so much. The Midnight Society member Amy did a YA zombie book round-up that you can spy here, but I want to add to that list with a few of my recent reads. L[...]

#PrideMonth Reading List: Scary Books and Authors Part 1

This June, we wanted to recognize LGBTQ+ communities by celebrating our own way—with scary books. Give us all the scary, spooky, creepy, and atmospheric books. Add some amazing books to your TBR list by reading books by and/or about LGBTQ+ people. What is #PrideMonth? A little background... Every June, Pride Month is celebrated across the United States to commemorate the Stonewall Riots and to celebrate and fight for equal rights for all people. The Stonewall Riots happened in June 1969 in New York City's Greenwich Village. Christopher Street Liberation Da[...]

#Murdertrending : A Review

Helllllo, Kittens!   I feel kinda bad for referring to you guys as kittens for the last year or two, since I've recently become a cat owner myself. And let me tell you about Velociraptor. She's a complete jerk. Love her, but holy hell. The cat is a dick. One cannot simply talk about a kitten without sharing a photo. Anyhoo. Our founding mother / one of the greatest humans alive, Jolene, gifted me a copy of Gretchen McNeil's newest book, #MurderTrending, and I just have to tell you guys about it. So...shall we? I'm going to steal the book jacket off GR,[...]

Book Cover Review: THE GIRL AND THE GROVE by Eric Smith

As a visual and tactile learner, I judge books by their cover. And fifty percent of the time it works. Every time. Eric Smith's The Girl and the Grove was no exception. Since filming, I am halfway through the story and am happy to report that Eric Smith delivers what Jake Nordby's cover design promises. Tenfold. The Girl and the Grove is earthy, honest, and mysterious. And even though the bullies give me the jibblies, I have a hunch they'll get their comeuppance or redemption as I go. Special thanks to Eric Smith and Flux Books for donating this gem to o[...]

Suspiria

The year is 1977, and filmmaker Luciano Tovoli has created a masterpiece of horror cinematography. Don't believe me? Check this out...   It may be difficult to discern what this film is about, because the trailer leaves a lot to be imagined. This film is about, "An American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders."   The remake, coming to theaters November 2018, stars Dakota Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and star of the original film J[...]

Midnight Society Movie Night: Winchester

Horror movies are my favorite thing. Ever. Watching scary movies with friends is a luxury I lack, so each month I live-tweet a tale of terror to share my love of the dark and weird with everyone. This month for our Midnight Society Movie Night...let's watch Winchester! Join me, horror friends, for a night of ghosts! Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig and written by the Spierigs and Tom Vaughn, the story is inspired by  the legend of Sarah Winchester and her unique house. I saw this one in the theater and had a great time! You can read my thoughts about the[...]
