The Beautiful Horror of Pan’s Labyrinth

I am so excited that we are back!

So excited that I had to tell you all about the latest movie I watched this weekend. First, I need you to understand that I am not one to choose a film with subtitles.

Sure, I enjoyed the original version of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest; subtitles and all. But for the most part I get lost in the reading and miss much of the film. On Sunday, when the BF suggested we watch Pan’s Labyrinth, I first grumbled and groaned before telling him to just put it on. He swore I’d like it.

He knows me so well.

I was immediately sucked into the dark world created by Guillermo del Toro. The man’s fantasy world, is beautifully dark. Not only is he an amazing director, but also one of the most imaginative writers in film. The Pale Man who’s eyes reside in his hands, is truly a nightmare Ofelia imagines. He’s so much like her horrid father, that the girl stubbornly defies the faun’s directions and eats fruit from the table. This scene is where she is filled with the most dread and learns just how strong she really is. This alone is what eventually brings her to fight the man everyone fears.

There is soooo much in this film to scare you, yet there’s a hope that shines through in the end. As a horror fan, this has everything I could possibly want in a film and more.

One of my all time favorite movies! So dark. So haunting. So gorgeous.
