Explore the Mysteries of the Unknown

We're so spoiled nowadays when it comes to finding information on weird, supernatural and creepy stuff. You can Wikipedia the Amityville Horror, you can watch documentaries about ancient aliens on demand, and there's a podcast for everything from ghost hunting to past life regression. But it wasn't always that way. Back in the '80s, we watched our horror movies on VHS and Time Life Books told us about the Mysteries of the Unknown. https://youtu.be/ftFwtwMKLe0 Thirty-three volumes of paranormal awesomeness. Sadly, I never owned these books when I was a kid--but[...]

Twin Peaks Is a Must-Watch for Horror Fans

I love David Lynch. He infuses everything he creates with a weirdness that is almost cosmic. There is a disturbing undertone to all of his works that is punctuated by moments of outright terror. Each of his films and shows are filled with moments that once you've seen them stay embedded in your mind forever. He has a way of placing the viewer inside of someone else's dream (or nightmare), and making us reflect on the darker parts of ourselves. I came to David Lynch by way of Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986) and Wild at Heart (1990), the latter of which[...]

VENOM Is Back!

There was a time that Venom was a horror character in the Spider-Man universe. And if the first issue of Mike Costa's new Venom series is any indication, the horror is back. For those unfamiliar, the story of Venom began in Marvel's 1984 Secret Wars event. Before there was Venom, there was an alien symbiote that was initially thought to be a new and improved costume for Spidey. But in fact, it was an alien lifeform, and as it bonded with Peter Parker, it began to corrupt him. When Peter finally broke free of it, the creature bonded with a host that h[...]

Channel Zero: Candle Cove Is a Wonderful, Mysterious Nightmare

When I first saw the trailer for SyFy's new series Channel Zero: Candle Cove, I was immediately in. Just the flashed of disturbing imagery and the premise of a creepy kids TV show were enough to pique my interest. https://youtu.be/z0t9pCnRW4o For those that are not familiar, the premise of Channel Zero is that it's based on Creepypastas, short horror stories that often are played off as message board conversations or posts, making readers question whether or not they could actually be real. The first season of Channel Zero is based on a popular Creepypasta na[...]

In Dead Space, Everyone Can Hear You Scream

Every October I like to revisit some of my favorite horror games, and this year I went back to the 2008 masterpiece Dead Space. Equal parts Aliens and Event Horizon, Dead Space puts you in the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer for the Concordance Extraction Corporation in the year 2508. Isaac and a small crew are responding to a distress beacon sent out from the USG Ishimura, a "planet cracker"ship that is designed to harvest resources from planets and moons. https://youtu.be/OUrq0PQgqPg?list=PL3o-jq7bqjfR0IoJLGSRJqZxG3gfPmchT From the second the small group cra[...]

Whispers of Poe: The Cask of Amontillado

A little while back, I wrote about ASMR–Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (or ASMR), the tingly feeling some people experience when getting close personal attention like a haircut, eye exam, scalp massage, etc. Anyway, there is a ton of ASMR content out there on YouTube now, and since a lot of ASMR content involves whispering and speaking softly, a lot of people also use the video to help them fall asleep, or cope with stress and anxiety. A while back a friend and I started a YouTube channel that features gaming videos with soft spoken and whispered com[...]

Demon Week Recommended Read: Mister B. Gone by Clive Barker

It's Demon Week here at the Midnight Society, and I'm happy to recommend a book about a demon from my favorite modern horror author, Clive Barker. The book is called Mister B. Gone, and reading the book is a demonic encounter in an of itself. Mister B. Gone is the story of a demon named Jakabok Botch, a story that the demon himself narrates for the reader. Actually, he's not so much narrating as he is speaking directly to the reader, as if he's there with you, telling you his life story. He is constantly warning you that reading his story will not end well for yo[...]

October History: A Look Back at Horror Movies Released in October

It's October History Week at the Midnight Society, so of course I wanted my post to be related to horror movies in some way. So I decided to look back at the history of horror film releases in October, and what I found was kind of interesting. Over at www.the-numbers.com, you can check out movie releases by month and year. So, I started looking back at what horror films were released in October back in the day, and outside of a few milestone movies, October didn't really become a month known for horror flicks until the early 1980s. In fact, October didn't reall[...]

Scream Queens Is Back!

Scream Queens returned this week, and I couldn't be happier. I freaking love this show. And maybe the thing I love about it the most is just how much it embraces the humorous side of horror. See, I grew up on '80s b-horror movies, which means I like my horror with a big side of cheese. Evil Dead, Return of the living Dead, Night of the Creeps--there are plenty of examples of horror and humor going hand. Don't get me wrong--I love straight up terrifying horror as well--but I actually prefer to read those kinds of stories. When it comes to shows and movies, I wa[...]

Going Back at IT (The First 120 Pages)

As I wrote about a little while back, I am attempting to make my way through Stephen king's IT for the first time, and this is my fifth attempt. The previous four have all ended somewhere between the 500-700-page mark, if I remember correctly. So, I read through the first 120 pages or so, which, according to my Kindle, is approxiamtely 11% of the book. I just finished being introduced to Beverly, the sixth of our seven main characters. Her introduction was arguably the most jarring, as we are given a very close (and graphic) look at the abusive relationship that[...]
