The Way the World Ends
Hollowland – the first book in the young adult dystopian series The Hollows… “This is the way the world ends – not with a bang or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door.” Nineteen-year-old Remy King is on a mission to get across the wasteland left of America, and nothing will stand in her way – not violent marauders, a spoiled rock star, or an army of flesh-eating zombies.
The first line in this book is so awesome, that they had to put it right there in the book description.
“This is the way the world ends; not with a bang or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door.” ― Amanda Hocking, Hollowland
Is this not just the best first line? Sucks you right in! Hollowland is by Amanda Hocking (I believe you’ve probably heard of her) and is one of those free ebook finds. It’s hillarious, full of action, and has one of my favorite zombie killing scenes of all time! In a kitchen. In Las Vegas.
“Cause I lit him on fire,” I shrugged and brushed dust from my pants.” ― Amanda Hocking, Hollowland
The book has a cast of characters, who make the story all the fun it is. One of whom isn’t human. There’s a unique zombie mythology, a super super super cute rock star guy, and some great lines.
“Run the fuckers over,” Harlow said, and none of us disagreed with her.” — Amanda Hocking Hollowland
“You know something?” He lifted his head, and when he turned to me, he had this strange look in his eyes. Almost as if he was really seeing me for the first time. “I don’t think I ever really lived until this. I’ve never done anything that mattered before, but now I’m fighting to save my life, and yours. And I know it sounds really cheesy and lame, but I don’t think I ever really felt alive. Not until I met you.” ― Amanda Hocking, Hollowland
The major drawback of this book was the line editing. The errors are frequent. I was willing to forgive it, for the extreme amount of fun.
There’s a sequel, Hollowmen, but it’s a very different story. I still liked it, but it is slightly less fun, in large part because it’s missing some of the treasured characters.
That said, whether you pick up the sequel or not, Hollowland is a fun travelling zombie book, and like I said, it has one of my favorite zombie kill scenes.

I haven’t read this series yet. Totally enjoyed Amanda Hocking’s Trylle series though!
