Your Favorite Zombies

What's your favorite zombie mythos? I really enjoy it when writers take a common mythology and put their own spin on it. I mentioned Hollowland a couple weeks ago, and I was a big fan of the unique, and disgusting, take on zombies. In a completely different vein, Midnight Society's very own TA Brock has the Fatal series, where the zombies are only gross for a brief time near the end. The Other Life by Susan Winnacker has zombies, called Weepers, who have a rabies mutation. Still, my favorite zombies, are probably The Walking Dead, which is part of why I think i[...]

Horror in the News

Haunted houses aren't real. Ghosts and demons are things movie producers have created as a setting for the scariest movie plots. Right? Wrong! In a quiet suburb of Hanover York County, Pennsylvania, sits a pretty little house. The difference between this one and its neighbors is this one is haunted. Review: Welcome to the Dark House by Laurie Faria Stolarz

So last week, while reading the young adult horror novel Welcome to the Dark House by Laurie Faria Stolarz, I couldn't help but to gush to everyone who would listen about how much I loved this book. And to top it off, the person I used to cast the main character Ivy, happened to be the same person that the author envisioned for the role. How cool is that? She did a great job with characterization for the reader to envision the right person[...]

Lessons in Cryptozoology: Finding Bigfoot

A new community education class has been scheduled in Houston, TX, and it’s all about finding monsters. Local Bigfoot enthusiast and researcher Rob Riggs seeks to enlighten East Texans about the mysterious animals and lights that have been seen in the Big Thicket National Preserve, sightings he attributes to either geomagnetic fields affecting hikers’ perceptions, or temporary wormholes to other dimensions. Riggs has been studying Wild Ape sightings in Texas for years, and has even published a book on the subject, but wants to make sure that his research is[...]

The Curious Case of Annabelle, the Possessed Doll?

Good morning, spooky people. Today I'd like to introduce you to two prominent figures in the paranormal community. You've probably already heard of them if you've sat through Poltergeist, The Amityville Horror, The Haunted, or The Haunting in Connecticut. You know all those times that you settle in for a good scare, and the opening sequence informs you that the movie you're about to watch is based on a true story? A few of these accounts happily point back to a couple of folks who made it their life's work to document these cases. While the film adaptations[...]
