YA Zombie Book Round-up

There's something creepy about zombies. Sure, perhaps it's the carnal rage or unquenchable thirst for your brain. That certainly makes me prefer to never encounter one. I like my brain where it's at, thank you very much. But at the very core, I think it's deeper than that. There's something unsettling about things that should be dead, but did not stay that way. I think that's also why I love ghost stories so much. The Midnight Society member Amy did a YA zombie book round-up that you can spy here, but I want to add to that list with a few of my recent reads. L[...]

The Santa Clarita Diet

What did we ever do without Netflix? Seriously? Once upon a time, we had to wait an entire week in order to watch the next episode in our favorite show. Now, we can binge watch umpteen seasons of shows like Friends in a matter of a month! But then what do you do when you finish watching all of these old favorites? You find something new. And it doesn't have to be a popular show, either. There are so many choices to be had. To make things even more exciting and diverse...Netflix has created its own shows!!! One such show is The Santa Clarita Diet. It was reco[...]

For the Love of ZomBea’s Boutique: A Sneaky Little Preview (Part 1 of 2)

A while back, I happened to see this little beauty on Twitter and it made my graceless heart skip a beat. So I went to the original poster's twitter page and BAM! There was Bea. And I was hooked. As a lover of all things handmade, I had to check out this Etsy shop for myself.              And it was glorious.  It's called ZomBea's Boutique and it is run by Bea, from a magical place called Wells! Instantly obsessed, and in despearate need to know more about Bea, and Bea's Etsy shop, and Bea's mad sk[...]

Outrunning Zombies

Alright, the idea for this post comes from a comment our very own Jolene made to me on Facebook. For those who haven't yet friended us, here's what was said: Amy: Got a short run in today. The snow made everything so pretty! Jolene: Look at you running! I only run if I am being chased. I've always said this very thing. That running was only useful to get away. I'd even laugh about being one of the first people to die in an apocalypse, because even the zombies would be able to catch me. Not. Any. More. I can't yet run far or very fast, but[...]

Zombies, Not Just Mindless Brain-Eaters

Welcome to zombie week! I hope it's been fun for you and no un-dead have wandered out of a cornfield to eat you for dinner. If you're reading this, I guess you're safe, but stay vigilant! I have to admit that I'm not a huge zombie fan...ghosts and demons are more my jimmie-jam. Watching the un-dead saunter along the street hoping to catch and eat people never thrilled me. But I'm hopping on the zombie train because I have discovered something. Zombies can be more than mindless creatures hobbling out of the trees. This revelation struck when I read... Zombie[...]

Lipstick & Zombies: Rockin’ the Apocalypse

It's not often that a writer can pin down the exact moment they came up with the idea for their book or series, but I can, because it was on twitter. https://twitter.com/faithmckay/status/458316923118166016 Yes, The Spice Girls were very big in the 1980s. *headdesk* https://twitter.com/faithmckay/status/458317110129598464 https://twitter.com/faithmckay/status/458317493619015681 https://twitter.com/faithmckay/status/458327130279931904 AND THERE IT IS. I was kidding when I hit tweet. But then it wheedled its way into my thoughts. What would that story look[...]

Writing Bloody: My Fav Zombie Books

Long before The Walking Dead TV series, I was a zombie fan. I loved reading zombie stories and watching zombie movies. But I'll be the first to admit that I might not make it if there's a real life apocalypse. I'm too slow. Lol! I do have a bunch of favorites, some of which I've showcased on our blog before and some are new ones. I'd love to hear about your favorite zombie reads in the comments below, so post away! My Top Five Zombie Books 1.  My number one favorite series is written by Jonathan Maberry. I was sucked in by the very first page of Rot & Ruin[...]

New #Horror: Fear the Walking Dead

Last Sunday, the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead aired on AMC. The acting, writing, and production value I've enjoyed on The Walking Dead are here as well, so I'll be watching the second episode tonight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDxew5SguVw One of the reasons zombies are such a popular trope right now is how ripe (ha!) they are for the thematic explorations of our world. In the first episode, the following concepts were introduced. Check out how timely they are: 1. Addiction The show opens on Nick Clark (played by Frank Dillane), a heroin addict,[...]

‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Shows Promise

(NOTE: I will keep this review as spoiler-free as possible, for those who have not seen the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead yet.) I was very pleasantly surprised by the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead (FTWD) this past Sunday. I believe it actually has the potential to be a better show than its predecessor, if the show doesn’t squander its biggest asset--the fact that it’s set before the full-blown zombie apocalypse. See, I don’t care why the outbreak started--in fact, I hope we never find out. What FTWD is exploring so far (and granted, it’s o[...]
