How to Write New Adult Horror

Okay, this title may be a tad misleading. There is no way I will tell you HOW to write, let alone how to write horror. However, there are some things to keep in mind when writing horror in the NA category. Keep in Mind the Age of Your Characters NA characters are to be college age--meaning 18-25ish. This doesn't mean they have to be in college, but at the very least they should be out on their own for the first time. The main character in my story actually turns 18 and begins her journey into full time employment. Your Characters Should be Having New Experiences M[...]

Goodreads Horror Book Lists

I'm a huge fan of Goodreads and there's one feature I love about it the most...Goodreads Listopia. What in the heck is Goodreads Listopia? Goodreads Listopia are lists of books that are created by users in order to lump similar books together. Users can also vote on books that they think should be added to the lists. You can do a general search of Listopia by using this link. My Favorite Horror Listopia Lists There's a multitude of MG and YA horror book lists on Goodreads so I thought that I would share a few of my favorites. Best YA Horror Books and Series Y[...]

Arkham Horror: The Granddaddy of Tabletop Horror

Just within the past fifteen years boardgames got interesting, and then promptly entered a golden age. No more was there the blandy McBlanderson choices of Monopoly, Sorry, and Candyland (Clue, of course is amazing) of the past eighty years, and no longer did you need a math degree if you wanted to get into the more obscure stuff. Then came 2005, when the great Fantasy Flight Games released a cleaned-up second edition of an obscure Lovecraftian game from the '80s called Arkham Horror. Arkham Horror is a cooperative game for 1 to 8 players. It's the 1920s, an[...]

New Adult

Since I recently self-published my debut NA psychological horror, The Bleeding Heart, I've been thinking a lot about what new adult is, what it means to me, and how it's perceived in the publishing world. Why? Because unless I'm talking to another writer or someone in the book industry, new adult is a completely foreign term and I've had to explain it to quite a few people. I have found a niche in new adult horror, so I decided to dedicate my posts on our blog to this category and genre of literature. I hope you join me in the celebration:) Before we can move o[...]

Watch or Don’t: The ABCs of Death (2012)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU2NHb_pKso Did you all hear about the substitute teacher in Ohio that showed The ABCs of Death to her classes? As a teacher, I was curious to check it out to see just how much of a felony it was. After watching it, I can say that's a pretty big felony. It's extremely obvious that it should not be shown in schools, but I'm a fan of anthologies in print or film, so I checked out The ABCs of Death, which gives 26 international filmmakers different letters of the alphabet to capture through horror. It was fun to see the cultural vari[...]

Monsters of Dr. Who… The Minotaur

WELCOME to the third Friday of the month... umm, hang on *checks calendar* Ahem. Yes! The third Friday of the month! For all Midnight Societers (is that a word? It is now!), it's Dr. Who day, at least in the land of Kathy it is. Once again, I bring you horror cleverly hidden in a science fiction show. The Dr. Who episode THE GOD COMPLEX written by Toby Whithouse aired in 2011 and starred Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor. Yes, this episode had a great monster, but more than that, this show had an all around horror vibe. Dr. Who does that. And I love it. Every s[...]

Share the Frankenlove

And now, a commercial break. But a themed one. There are a TON of Frankenstein commercials out there, but this one is probably my favorite. It uses imagery from the original tale, and...and... it's funny. I believe it was filmed on the same lot as the original movie. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS0XceWlGAs[...]

Online Collaboration: hitRECord

I happened on a video one day while trolling through Facebook. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (love him by the way) has created an online collaborative production company; one that is begging for writers, editors, artist, and musicians to come together and create. HOW COOL IS THIS? Not only is this a TV show, but also an online community. All you writers out there can participate in the Weekly Writing Challenge! Want a taste of the prompts? Here's WEEK 35's CHALLENGE: Write a comedy story about a person who becomes non-human. *The Deadline for Week 35's Challenge is Mond[...]

This month, we'll be reading the recent release from Midnight Society member, Amy Giuffrida, The Bleeding Heart. It’s here at The Bleeding Heart that Brooklyn practices the art of dispensing pain onto others. Fatal Frame: The Best of the Best

Nintendo recently announced that Fatal Frame V: Oracle of the Sodden Raven, a game that was until now a Japan-only release, would finally make it's way to a America and Europe later this year for the Wii U, so I thought it would be a good time to look back on this criminally ignored series. Out of the original unholy trilogy of survival horror---Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame---Frame Frame was by far the scariest of the three. It took the rich environments of Resident Evil and the relentless psychological warfare of Silent Hill, added in a[...]
