AHS Hotel Preview & Predictions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghrEiLgehDU American Horror Story is one of my favorite shows on television. Just seeing the story world in this trailer gets my heart pumping. Let's do this! What We Know Lady Gaga plays Countess Elizabeth, proprietor of Hotel Cortez. She has some dark needs: first, an "ancient blood virus" that she must satiate by drinking human blood, and then, a ravenous sexual appetite--sleeping with both Matt Bomer's character Donovan (the son of the front clerk, Iris, played by Kathy Bates) and Finn Wittrock's male model character Tristan.[...]

Monsters of Dr. Who… Clockwork Men

Hi all! It's an exciting day here. Not only am I bringing you yet more horror from our favorite science fiction show, but the new season starts TOMORROW! Dr. Who returns. Eeeeeeekk! I'm hoping for more terror out in space. But first let's go back to the Tenth Doctor played by David Tennant back in 2006 and an episode that takes us back in Earth's history. The show begins with screaming. People dressed in elaborate gowns and wearing masks race through a hall. Behind them a shadow drifts across the wall and a terrible ticking, whirring sound  makes your bl[...]

New #Horror: Fear the Walking Dead

Last Sunday, the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead aired on AMC. The acting, writing, and production value I've enjoyed on The Walking Dead are here as well, so I'll be watching the second episode tonight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDxew5SguVw One of the reasons zombies are such a popular trope right now is how ripe (ha!) they are for the thematic explorations of our world. In the first episode, the following concepts were introduced. Check out how timely they are: 1. Addiction The show opens on Nick Clark (played by Frank Dillane), a heroin addict,[...]

‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Shows Promise

(NOTE: I will keep this review as spoiler-free as possible, for those who have not seen the first episode of Fear the Walking Dead yet.) I was very pleasantly surprised by the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead (FTWD) this past Sunday. I believe it actually has the potential to be a better show than its predecessor, if the show doesn’t squander its biggest asset--the fact that it’s set before the full-blown zombie apocalypse. See, I don’t care why the outbreak started--in fact, I hope we never find out. What FTWD is exploring so far (and granted, it’s o[...]

Monsters of Dr. Who… Weeping Angels

As old as the universe. No one knows where they come from. The Weeping Angels of Dr. Who. In 2007, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) met these creepy statues in the episode "Blink". Created by Stephen Moffat, these aliens quickly became the scariest monsters on the show.   Look at them and they are unable to move, quantum locked, which protects them... the ultimate defense. However, look away and they attack, moving extremely fast, surrounding their victim in the blink of an eye. Their serene faces twist into an evil snarl with vampire-like teeth. The[...]

Writing Bloody- Series vs. Serial

My favorite TV show of all time--Buffy the Vampire Slayer--is a series. What does that mean? Well, a series is a show with the same characters throughout, but the each episode is a different story. Take the Once More with Feeling episode. Admittedly one of my favorites, the characters are compelled by a demon to sing their truths. One episode. That's it.   https://www.reddit.com/r/fivenightsatfreddys/comments/357bqm/was_it_me_teaser_megathread/ Yes, BtVS does have a thread that is carried throughout each episode--the love between the Slayer and th[...]

My Obsession with Ghosts

Viewer discretion is advised... Every episode begins this way. And I watch - my guilty pleasure. Real people tell their paranormal stories, ghostly encounters, possessions, and fights with demons all with the help of Hollywood effects to bring the tales to life. It began in 2005 with the TV show 'A Haunting', which played on the Discovery Channel until 2007. This show gave us the episode 'A Haunting in Connecticut', which was later made into a movie. I watched every episode, more than once. I was sad when it vanished. However, it was revived on Destination[...]

The Monsters of Dr. Who… Autons

It's Dr. Who day! For all of us who know that the fabulous BBC show is more than science fiction. Horror lurks in the timey-wimey stuff. And today, scary comes in the form of everyday things. The Autons first appeared in the episode "Spearhead from Space" in 1970, meeting the Third Doctor played by Jon Pertwee. Classified as robots, they serve the Nestene Consciouness, an alien entity bent on conquering the Earth. The Autons are anything plastic, given life by Nestene energy. Imagine walking down a street when the mannequins in a store window suddenly move,[...]

Monsters of Dr. Who… The Minotaur

WELCOME to the third Friday of the month... umm, hang on *checks calendar* Ahem. Yes! The third Friday of the month! For all Midnight Societers (is that a word? It is now!), it's Dr. Who day, at least in the land of Kathy it is. Once again, I bring you horror cleverly hidden in a science fiction show. The Dr. Who episode THE GOD COMPLEX written by Toby Whithouse aired in 2011 and starred Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor. Yes, this episode had a great monster, but more than that, this show had an all around horror vibe. Dr. Who does that. And I love it. Every s[...]
