What is The Great Horror Campout?

According to the website, The Great Horror Campout (GHC) is a “choose your own adventure” overnight, interactive camping experience. Basically, you pay to camp and choose how extreme you want to participate, whether you want a full experience or play it safe in the “chicken zone.” The event lasts 12 hours (8 PM – 8 AM) and no one under the age of 18 is allowed. According to the website, campers find themselves confronting every fear that haunted them as children.

If you read the safety and terms portion of the website, it tells you that your experience may include “total darkness, water spray and splash, uneven surfaces, steps up and down, strobe lighting, latex, narrow tunnels, crouch spaces which require you to bend down while walking, sudden loud noises, live scareactors, fog and scent effects which are all intended to startle and frighten you. The disclaimer also states that: you may be forcibly handled, moved, bound, hooded, chained and subjected to simulated torture. You may witness strong verbal content, which may be considered offensive in nature.

What To Bring?

  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Flashlight
  • Dossier (something they send to you after you sign up)
  • Old White T-shirt (if you’re playing blood tag) <- I don’t even know what to think about this
  • Snorkle mask
  • Underwater flashlight
  • Few changes of underwear
  • Change of clothes

What People Are Saying

I watched several Youtube videos of people reacting to their night at The Great Horror Campout. They were all the same. This event is freaky! In one, this big guy went camping with his three friends. In the middle of the night they were woken up by creepy hillbillies, the hillbillies forced the friends to tie their 4th friend up, then they were forced to leave him bound and gagged in the woods. Apparently the hillbillies came back to untie and un-gag him…30 to 40 minutes later.

Another talked about how they were woken up in the middle of the night by a screaming girl that somehow got into their tent.

There is a safety phrase you can use if it becomes too much. And it’s “I want my mommy.” But from some of the reviews I’ve listened to, the safeword was ignored.

Look them up. They are entertaining at the very least to watch.

Would You Dare?

I might go, but definitely stay in the chicken zone. And pack lots of anti-anxiety drugs.

Ignoring the safe word, though? That’s a no-no.

Hahaha! I hear you! I’d love to go but I’m not sure I could handle the hardcore stuff!

I … don’t … know. Part of me is screaming YES! But I’m more of a ghosts/demon horror … can I have ghosts? And not so sure of blood tag … O.o Can we stay in a haunted castle?

Bhahaaha! Yes Kathy! I’m fine with that. I know what you mean. I’d much rather a night in somewhere haunted. I really want to go to the Queen Mary.Oh! Post idea!

No, no, no. I draw the line here. I don’t even get on rollercoasters. But if it was like Kathy said and I could have a haunted castle experience, I would freaking love that. Being left alone in the woods is not fun for me. Waking up to the sound of a ghost creaking across my floor? Lol!

Hahaha! I know what you mean Krystal. It’s in my town this weekend and no I’m not going. It could be fun but I’m not sure yet it’s for me. I’d love to do a haunted one though. If there was an experience like that, I’d definitely go!

I also DO NOT CAMP, and would only go if it was castle creepy times. Even then, I probably wouldn’t go, because I am not a whole lot of fun at haunted houses, etc. since I am very hard to jump-shock, am amused more than scared when approached by scare-actors, and do not react well to being manipulated/given commands. I worry that if the actors were able to convince me to go along with their show, I would reach a breaking point that meant I’d either ruin it for everyone else by refusing to play anymore, or possibly be a danger/threat to the performers by fighting back. I do much better to either be part of the theatre show itself, or an uninvolved observer. Having people try to get you to play along when you don’t know the script upsets me in a way that isn’t scary, just unfun for everyone.

OTOH, I would really enjoy being a scare-actor. I have not done that since high school. It was good times. We used to “fall” off the roof of the building for the waiting crowds.

Oh my gosh! You would fall of the roof of your school? I can’t even imagine the fun it would be to scare the living daylights out of people. I should look into that. Ha!

I don’t mind camping but I’m not sure how I would handle being woken up abruptly in the woods. I normally do okay at Halloween Haunt or things like that but…well… I’m not sure how I would do at this one. But blood tag sounds fun. 😛
