The Mist (2007)

The problems all begin with a huge lightening storm. One that I’m sure my hubby would sit outside and watch, but Dave Drayton does the right thing and takes his family to the basement. When morning comes, he finds a lot of damage caused by fallen trees. When Dave and his wife check out the damage of their boat shed, there’s a mist coming from the mountain top.

In need of supplies, Dave (Thomas Jane) and his son, Billy (Nathan Gamble) travel with their neighbor, Brent to town. It’s here that the mist takes over and they find themselves in danger of things in the mist. There are huge tentacles that whisk away a grocery store bag boy, flying stinging bugs that poison a clerk named Sally, and flying reptiles who like to rip muscle from the bone of their pray.

They thought that was bad enough, until they find bodies encased in cocoons. This is where the bugs breed and spin their toxic webs, taking down more of the grocery store survivors. As the little spider things crawled out of the bodies, I couldn’t help but scratch my skin.

My hubby and I had running commentary throughout this film. Carol (Melissa McBride) and Andrea (Laurie Holden) from The Walking Dead, plus Aidan (Sam Witwer) from Being Human were part of the cast. Marcia Gay Harden plays a fantastic crazy religious fanatic, who heightens the tension. Hubby and I kept trying to figure out what these beasts were: super-sized mosquitos, pterodactyls, octopus, spiders, crab thing.

The best part, at least for me, was when Mrs. Carmody (Harden) bullies Private Jessup (Witwer) to admit his involvement of a special project on the mountain. She then takes the role of God’s vessel, preaching the word of God. She is the BEST part of the movie.

The Mist is a pretty good adaptation of Stephen King’s original story and totally worth watching. And the end…Well, I can’t give that away, but it’s totally out of this world (hint, hint). Need more? Check out the video.
