Horror in Unfamiliar Territory: The Reddit Resources

Once upon a time when this creepy lady first met her honeybunch (hereafter known as HB for simplicity’s sake), they discovered that they shared many geeky things in common and affection blossomed over text messages and in the depths of the blanket forts they built together to watch movies. He liked the Avengers and she liked the X-Men. He wrote code and she designed interfaces. They both enjoyed fiery Indian food and even though he didn’t like horror movies, he curled up with her to watch The Babadook for the first time. Their blanket forts became architectural masterpieces (because hey, we’re grown ups here.) All was well. Eventually discovered a difference between them — a significant thing if you’re nerdy enough to make a thing out of it:

She was Tumblr. He was Reddit.

He despaired for her GIF image abuse, and she bemoaned the lack of infinite scroll, but being curious individuals, they eventually found the courage to venture into each others’ respective territory.

What she found waiting there was something quite surprising: a treasure trove of dark delights in various formats — short fictions, long fictions, documented accounts of strange occurrences, and a wealth of creepy pictures the likes of not even tumblr could match.

For your enjoyment, I offer a selection of my first forays into the dark wood that is Reddit, and everything I found there:

Horror in Unfamiliar Territory: The Reddit Resources

Dreadit: The Horror Reddit
For all things horror, including movie guides, books, and games.

HorrorLit
Books, books, books! Scary books!

Library of Shadows
For readers and writers of horror fiction. (Nice design for this subreddit too.)

WeirdLit
Yup. Weird fiction has a place on this list. Lovecraft, anyone?

Super Short Scary Stories
Bite-sized fiction ranging from creepy to grotesque — and yeah, you can totally submit your scares.

Creepy
Loads of really bizarre, uncanny, and just plain strange photographs to get your dark side into gear. Need plot bunnies? Look no further.

NoSleep
While this is the last on my shortlist of Reddit finds for Horror lovers, its certainly not the least. In fact, I think it’s my favourite… because a lot of the accounts listed on NoSleep are true.

I’ve never really ventured into Reddit, this post makes me think I should. But, yes, Tumblr person here.

That Mickey Mouse gif is amazing!

I think I’ve been converted. I eventually found a plugin that lets me see images in-post and get infinite scroll going for the site. Feels a bit more familiar now.

I’ve never been one for Reddit but this sounds interesting. I’ll have to look more into it 🙂
