The Ouija Board

The original Ouija Board, originally created in 1852, when William Benjamin Carpenter analyzed how the original talking boards worked. The toy Ouija board was patented in 1891 by Elijah Bond, Charles Kennard, and William H.A. Maupin. From here, the idea of a talking board grew in popularity and eventually became the Ouija board we know today.

In 1973–the year I was born BTW, maybe this has something to do with my love of horror–The Exorcist hit the big screen; changing the fun game into a gateway to hell. This certainly didn’t deter people from using one, instead it became something to scare everyone who used it.

As a teen, I know this was something that we did for fun at sleepovers. We’d wait until parents and siblings went to bed to pull out the Ouija board. Each swearing that we weren’t pushing the planchette, but that it must be a spirit in charge. Every time, screaming would erupt and lights would need to be turned on. Scaring the crap out of yourself was cool then. We’d try to lift each other with our fingers, chanting “light as a feather, stiff as a board”. And at every sleepover, there’d be someone brave enough to shut themselves in the bathroom to stare in the mirror and say “Bloody Mary” three times.

That was then, this is now and the Ouija board freaks me out. It’s the feeling I get when I hear the name. There are believers out there. Those who post YouTube videos claiming they see demons when using the board, while others snicker and believe there’s just something in our bodies movements that cause the planchette to glide around the board to spell out doom for its users. And now, there’s a movie with the same name. So I ask you this:Do you think the Ouija board is for real?

Whether you believe in the power behind the Ouija or not is up to you. Me? I’m going to stick with keeping very far away from this board. For those who think playing with this is all fun and games…I give you…

Thanks, Timon! Have you seen that there are Ouija board charms now? Not something I’m willing to wear around my neck.

I will NOT be messing with a Ouija board. Nope. Nope. Nopity nope. They do, however, fascinate me.

I don’t mess with things like Ouija boards or voodoo shops or ANY of that. Just in case.
