When I was growing up, the main question on the playground was “What are you afraid of?” I was afraid of the usual things; the dark, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, etc. My friends were afraid of spiders and snakes. I remember thinking that they obviously didn’t know what a zombie gnawing on a torn limb looked like, otherwise that’d be on their lists too.
I also thought that as I grew up, my list of fears would slowly but surely shrink. Instead, it grew.
The thing about fear is that it’s unlike any other emotion out there. It doesn’t just go away. It grows with you, constantly morphing itself so it fits into your ever changing life.
So even though I’m not afraid of walking into a dark room anymore, I’m still afraid of what lurks in the back of my closet at night. You know what I’m talking about, right? When you stare into the shadowy corners, but you don’t see anything. Then – the second you close your eyes – you get the distinct feeling that someone…or something…just started staring back.
Instead of being afraid of a zombie, I’m afraid of whether or not recent pandemics are cooked up in a government lab and dispersed in order to stimulate the economy. I’m not afraid that my dog is a werewolf but I get a little nervous walking my son next to giant, unruly dogs…especially on a full moon. Ghosts don’t freak me out, but the idea of losing a loved one makes my heart hurt.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that If I were back on that playground and someone asked me what I was afraid of, I’d have a much bigger list. Now, I have to ask….What are you afraid of?
I’m new here. You don’t know me, but I’m just like you.
I was the kid in the library who hid between the shelves, coveting “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.” I was the one who told campfire stories about the Sasquatch that were so realistic I made even the big kids wet the bed. I was the babysitter that turned the entire basement into a haunted house and mercilessly scared my wee charges.
In other words, I’m a horror fan! I’m so excited to be part of The Midnight Society!!! In honour of my first ever blog post, I thought I’d kick things off with a little giveaway!!
* I’m aware that I’m abusing the !!!!’s. *
