What are you afraid of?

When I was growing up, the main question on the playground was “What are you afraid of?”  I was afraid of the usual things; the dark, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, etc. My friends were afraid of spiders and snakes. I remember thinking that they obviously didn’t know what a zombie gnawing on a torn limb looked like, otherwise that’d be on their lists too.

I also thought that as I grew up, my list of fears would slowly but surely shrink. Instead, it grew.

The thing about fear is that it’s unlike any other emotion out there. It doesn’t just go away. It grows with you, constantly morphing itself so it fits into your  ever changing life.

So even though I’m not afraid of walking into a dark room anymore, I’m still afraid of what lurks in the back of my closet at night. You know what I’m talking about, right? When you stare into the shadowy corners, but you don’t see anything. Then – the second you close your eyes – you get the distinct feeling that someone…or something…just started staring back.

Instead of being afraid of a zombie, I’m afraid of whether or not recent pandemics are cooked up in a government lab and dispersed in order to stimulate the economy. I’m not afraid that my dog is a werewolf but I get a little nervous walking my son next to giant, unruly dogs…especially on a full moon. Ghosts don’t freak me out, but the idea of losing a loved one makes my heart hurt.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that If I were back on that playground and someone asked me what I was afraid of, I’d have a much bigger list. Now, I have to ask….What are you afraid of?

But wait! There’s more…

Hello…

I’m new here. You don’t know me, but I’m just like you.

I was the kid in the library who hid between the shelves, coveting “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.” I was the one who told campfire stories about the Sasquatch that were so realistic I made even the big kids wet the bed. I was the babysitter that turned the entire basement into a haunted house and mercilessly scared my wee charges.

In other words, I’m a horror fan! I’m so excited to be part of The Midnight Society!!! In honour of my first ever blog post, I thought I’d kick things off with a little giveaway!!

* I’m aware that I’m abusing the !!!!’s. *

For starters, you can pick any book out of The Haunted Library and I’ll buy you a copy for the device of your choice. Or a paperback if you’re like me and are still hopelessly addicted to book smells.

I love sending little care packages, so you’ll get a fun little package with some spooky and sweet things to compliment your sweet new read.

Lastly, you’ll get my undying love. (Warning, it will legit never die. Not with a stake, not with an axe, not with a spell. Accept with caution).

All you have to do is say ‘Hello’  in the comments below and you’re entered. I’ll announce the winner next, next Friday in my next (say next one more time) post 😀

x

Jenna

I think fear doubles when you become a mother. I am still afraid of flying, I was told it would be easier when I got older. But now my fear is multiplied because I am still terrified to die in a plane crash, but more so because I would leave my children motherless or worse, they would be with me. Hello Jenna, great first post!

Ok, I have to share two things:

    1) When I was 5, I saw the (yes, comedy) Little Shop of Horrors, and was convinced until I was 12 that the man-eating plant lurked in my dark bedroom.

    2) Three days ago, I watched Dr. Who for the first time, first episode of the 11th doctor, at the recommendation of a Twitter friend. The premise was an interdimensional monster living in Amy’s house for 12 years, which hid in a bedroom she couldn’t see. I think I’m becoming more disturbed by that the more I think about it. Yiiiiiiikes.

There are things I find scary-spooky – the kind that are scary yet fascinating, that keep me reading or watching because I’m invested – and then there are things that are just plain scary, the ones that push my buttons so hard it ceases to be fun. Ghosts, zombies, etc. belong in the first column; fire, car crashes etc. belong in the second. I *loved* The Walking Dead, for instance, but had to break up with it at the beginning of s3 when it became clear it would involve a baby…that is a level of threat that just exceeds my ability to cope!

I’m not as into scary as you are, but when a book is good, I love going along for the ride. Just finished The Night Gardener. That was scary and spooky.
