Frankenlove! Making the Monster: The Science Behind Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

There's always a new book out about Frankenstein, and that's fine by me. The newest to cross my screen is Making the Monster: The Science Behind Mary Shelley's Frankenstein by Kathryn Harkup and I could not be more interested. I don't have an opinion yet, as the book doesn't release until February 8th, but I'm excited to take a look. What a beautiful cover. The year 1818 saw the publication of one of the most influential science-fiction stories of all time. Frankenstein: Or, Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley had a huge impact on gothic horror and science fic[...]

Dogs of Horror

Hello, darlings,   Life has been so shitty lately, so I've kind of dropped off the face of the earth. We had to put our beloved dog, Indi, down on New Years Eve. So, without further adieu, I give you the Dogs of Horror. RIP Indi. I love you.   Cujo (1983)   Okay, so not only is this the kickoff to my favourite Friends ship (JoChel), but it stars one scary ass dog!   I never watched the movie Beethoven the same The Lost Boys (1985) Nanook, the husky, is one of the cutest horror dogs around. He makes a kill shot by knocking a vamp into[...]

Let’s Talk #Horror Movies: Insidious: The Last Key

Hello, horror movie lovers!  I am a big fan of the Insidious movie series, so when the newest  chapter released earlier this month, I WENT! So let’s talk scary. INSIDIOUS: The Last Key The fourth in the series, but the second in the story's timeline, this horror film directed by Adam Robitel, written by Leigh Whannell, and produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and James Wan follows my favorite character Elise Rainier played by Lin Shaye as she faces the horrors of her past. In Insidious: Chapter 3, Elise returns to using her gifts to help others and makes pea[...]

The Feel of Little Legs Crawling on the Back of Your Neck

“What’s the matter, Mr. Pratt? Bugs got your tongue?” And with that, the horror of Creepshow overtakes us. We’re already on edge watching the cockroaches skitter through Mr. Pratt’s immaculate home. They pop out and dart into the light. It's unnerving. Moments before Mr. Pratt is overcome with cockroaches, before they pour from his mouth and burst out of his split skin, we are already imagining it. Bugs. On his tongue. In his mouth. Imagine them crawling around in there, their spiky little legs scraping against your teeth. If you are shuddering b[...]

La Chatelaine – The Killer Utility Belt You Need

How often do you search for your keys or your cell phone in your purse, only to find all the things you really don't need? Or look for that pesky tool everywhere only to find it after you've bought a replacement already. World, meet the chatelaine, the most useful and beautiful utility belt for Victorian women. I sincerely hope this year is the year that these come back. According to MentalFloss and chatelaine historian Monica F. Cohen, the word "chatelaine" itself is derived from the medieval word for a castellan, or a keeper of the castle or chateau who wo[...]

Let’s Watch a #Horror Movie: Annabelle: Creation

Let’s watch a horror movie! Annabelle: Creation! Doesn’t that sound like fun? Of course it does. Watching scary movies with friends is the best! And what could be better than demons and dolls? Nothing. This 2017 horror movie was directed by David F Sandburg and written by Gary Dauberman and is the prequel to the 2014 movie Annabelle and ties in nicely to that movie. We all remember that creepy possessed doll fondly and this movie shares the doll’s origin. Because why wouldn’t you want to know? Samuel and Esther Mullins, played by Anthony LaPaglia and[...]

New Year, New You

She ate the water hemlock because she knew it was poisonous. The white blossoms were tasteless, but the leaves tasted green, like a stalk of celery. The first cramp was brutal, and that was it. She died there on the trail, just where it got muddy as it skirted around the marsh. Her spirit drifted right up from the spot where she fell. Her body had landed in an awkward position, partway into the tall grass. So much for a graceful departure. Her body looked wretched. She didn’t remember any of the thrashing and pain that showed on her gaping mouth and twisted l[...]
