Let’s Play UNTIL DAWN for #OctFearFest (Ep. 1)

In addition to being a huge horror fan, I'm a lifelong gamer. So, anytime those two interests can overlap, it makes me very, very happy. And it just so happens that a game arrived recently that not only combines my love of horror and games, but does so with my favorite kind of horror movie--the slasher film. UNTIL DAWN is a game where you as the player are essentially directing your own slasher film. Every choice that you make has a ripple effect on the story, and who lives and dies will do so because of your decisions (or lack thereof). For #OctFearFest, I'll[...]

RIP Wes Craven

You've probably heard by now, but Wes Craven passed away on August 30th after losing his fight with brain cancer. He was 76 years old and a super horror champ. He was a writer and director of many horror classics, A Nightmare on Elm St, Scream, and Last House On The Left just to name a few. He's truly a horror legend, and I can't imagine someone who loves horror not knowing and loving at least one of his films. I will admit, I was always a Halloween and Friday the 13th girl (I was brought up on those franchises). Scream and A Nightmare on Elm St are w[...]

Remembering Roddy Piper With THEY LIVE

I was shocked and saddened to learn about the passing of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper a couple weeks back. In addition to being one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, Roddy Piper teamed with my favorite director John Carpenter in 1988 for a movie that has had a profound influence on my own work--They Live. At the time They Live came out, both Carpenter and Piper were both still huge in their respective industries. Carpenter had been on a decade-long directorial run of amazing genre movies that included Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christin[...]

Horror and Heavy Metal: A Match Made In…

Horror and heavy metal--they go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Why do these two great tastes taste so great together? There are some very obvious reasons, and I found myself thinking about them quite a bit when I attended a horror convention and a heavy metal music festival in the same weekend. On Saturday July 18th, I spent the day selling books and hanging out at the Connecticut Horror Fest. My friends over at the Horror News Network put on another great show, and their star-studded guest lineup featured Doug Bradley (Pinhead in Hellraiser), Gunnar[...]

Annie Knowby Battles the Evil Dead in Beyond Dead by Dawn

Most horror fans are intimately familiar with Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series, and those that aren’t soon will be with the upcoming Ash Vs. Evil Dead TV series. Evil Dead is about to become huge again, and that’s great news for fans of Bruce Campbell, the Deadites and horror fans everywhere. Over the years, Evil Dead and its two sequels have been adapted and expanded into other mediums. There have been video games, comic book series, and even a musical. While some of these were straight adaptations of the source material, the ones that I’ve enjoyed the most[...]

40 Years Later, JAWS is Still a Masterpiece

When people ask me about the first horror movie I’ve ever watched, it’s usually Poltergeist that jumps to mind, mainly because I saw it when I was too young and that stupid clown scarred me for life. In reality though, Jaws was my first horror movie. I saw it when I was about six or seven years old, when my family was vacationing in Wells Beach, Maine. The TV was right next to the sliding glass doors of the cottage, through which I could see directly into the ocean. Yes, I watched Jaws less than a football field away from the water. To say that it profoundly[...]

Emotion Brings Horror to Life

So, I had a blog idea all set, then I took myself to see... And I tossed my original idea out the window. I am a fan of the Insidious films. I've seen the first two oh so many times and I love them. The Lamberts fight to survive against an evil threatening to tear their family apart. The ideas in this movie fascinate me. The images send shudders of delight through my horror-loving brain. The character who interested me the most was Elise, the psychic, the one with the power to see what haunted them, to guide them into the Further to do what had to be done[...]

Watch or Don’t: The ABCs of Death (2012)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU2NHb_pKso Did you all hear about the substitute teacher in Ohio that showed The ABCs of Death to her classes? As a teacher, I was curious to check it out to see just how much of a felony it was. After watching it, I can say that's a pretty big felony. It's extremely obvious that it should not be shown in schools, but I'm a fan of anthologies in print or film, so I checked out The ABCs of Death, which gives 26 international filmmakers different letters of the alphabet to capture through horror. It was fun to see the cultural vari[...]

Poltergeist, the Remake… A Mistake?

Being a horror fan, when I heard of the remake of Spielberg's 1982 movie POLTERGEIST, my reaction should have been... However, it was more like... Why? I am a fan of the original. There is nothing wrong with it. So many people, including many of us here at The Midnight Society, have been scarred for life by the clown doll, kid-eating tree, and child-devouring closet. Fabulous stuff, people. So, a remake? From this... to this... The trailers made it obvious that the special effects were... well, special. But was this movie the same story with updated[...]

Horror Mamas

Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas out there! In honor of the holiday, I compiled a list of some of the greatest Horror Mamas. Of course, it's a list based on my personal tastes (but I have pretty great tastes). They are in no particular order. Mrs. Vorhees of FRIDAY THE 13th Not many people know this, but Jason wasn't the killer in the original Friday the 13th. In the original, it was Jason's mama, Mrs. Vorhees. She went around killing people for they did to her son—letting him drown in the lake. That's one devoted (and demented) mama. Norma Bates of B[...]
