The Witch of Plum Hollow

As we come upon another session of Camp NaNoWriMo, I can't help but look back on all the projects I've worked on during these spring & summer writing retreats. My story ideas can come from anywhere. Strange snippets of conversation, weird news articles I read online, not to mention local places and faces that inspire. So, during my first attempt at writing a novel-in-a-month, I searched around for images to inspire one of my favorite places to set a story: the Creepy Small Town. Enter Ontario Abandoned Places, an online database of user-submitted photos o[...]

Which Witch is Which?

Hello, lovelies!   I'm sitting here, sipping a little brew I whipped up in the cauldron (spearmint AND peppermint tea - I'm crazyAF), researching witches. I was originally going to take things back a few hundred years but I decided to keep this post a bit more current this time around.   Growing up in a predominately Christian home, I was raised thinking witches were Halloween costumes and the stars of my favourite spooky movies (Hellllllo, Grand High Witch!).     As I delved deeper into the bowels of the library, and then the glorio[...]

Salem…Witches and History and Fun, Oh My!

I got home from vacation and wanted to share a little day trip we took to Salem. Yes, Salem, Massachusetts...yup, the place of the horrific witch trials. A city dripping with history. The old buildings still stand, making it a neat place to visit. Because of time, I didn't get to see everything. Dude, I didn't even know about the everything there was to see. Note: Give yourself an entire day to see Salem. I thought it would be a cool place to see, but more than that, a fascinating place to just be. I wanted to walk the streets, to set foot where such terrible an[...]

Coming in 2016: Exploring the Cauldron!

Witch! Witch! For just about as long as I can remember, I’ve had an obsession with witches. It probably ties into my infatuation with Halloween. But the crazy history, mystery, and magic that surrounds witches has always fascinated me. I have a special announcement today… There will be a new blog series here at The Midnight Society, written by moi. Announcing: Exploring the Cauldron! In 2016, I plan to set out on a new journey that I have been wanting to take for quite some time. For Exploring the Cauldron, I plan to inquisitively and respectfully explor[...]

A Review of Rosemary’s Baby

This week's horror movie review is...Rosemary's Baby (1968). I just happened upon this DVD while looking through the shelves at my local library. It's not like I've never heard of this movie, but I never really was drawn to Rosemary's Baby. Until now. Once upon a time, horror movies would build tension with music and layering the story. Rosemary's Baby does all of these things. I mean, you know in the beginning that something bad is going to happen, but not how. Many horror movies start out with young couple checking out an apartment. Things always begin so n[...]

Hansel and Gretel: Revenge is Nice

We learned a couple of things while we were trapped in that house. One, never walk in to a house made of candy. And two, if you’re gonna kill a witch, set her ass on fire. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. This came out in 2013, and is about KILLING ALL THE THINGS. Some people will say that not all witches are evil, that their powers could be used for good. I say burn them all! - Hansel With lots of fire. And headbutting. And shooting. And sarcasm. Things this movie isn't: for children.  I feel like whoever wrote this script was just like, "I wanna kill some[...]

The Witches of Salem

I'm packing my bags today. Not, as you might imagine, because I've been accused of doing something insidious and I need to get out of dodge, but because I'm hopping on a plane tomorrow and heading to Boston for a week for work. Given my proximity to several creepy things, including Salem, I figured it might be prime opportunity to open up the floor for discussion on the latest television show to jump on the horror bandwagon. We've seen the haunted house and asylum aliens a la American Horror Story, we've got the zombies in The Walking Dead, we're even taking a c[...]
