Mary Hades: The Darkness Comes, and I Greet it.

My Daylight Monsters (Mary Hades, #0.5) started out as a standalone short, but after reaching the top of the YA horror amazon list, Sarah Dalton expanded her plans for the Gothic novella, birthing the Mary Hades series! While a lot of people will undoubtedly compare My Daylight Monsters to Girl, Interrupted, which is fair, the tone of the story reminded me of Donnie Darko. In fact, the day after reading it, I had to rewatch that movie (ahhh, I love it so!). I told Sarah Dalton on twitter, and she said that while she hadn't thought of the movie while writing it,[...]

The Way the World Ends

Hollowland - the first book in the young adult dystopian series The Hollows... "This is the way the world ends - not with a bang or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door." Nineteen-year-old Remy King is on a mission to get across the wasteland left of America, and nothing will stand in her way - not violent marauders, a spoiled rock star, or an army of flesh-eating zombies. The first line in this book is so awesome, that they had to put it right there in the book description. “This is the way the world ends; not with a bang or a whimper, but[...]

The Poison Eaters

Holly Black is definitely an author I could see sitting around a campfire at midnight, telling a story that would give me the creeps. For a good look at some of the stories she might tell, I would recommend checking out The Poison Eaters, a short volume with a dozen short stories by Holly Black. Among the stories in this book is The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, which you'll likely recognize as her awesome popular book. This short story is something not to miss, especially if you're a fan of vampires that are unique and not of the friendly variety. Our main charact[...]

Hi Babes, I’m Back! – The Babysitter Series from R.L. Stine

Lately, I've been making bi-weekly trips down to my local used book store The Bookman, and shopping their selection of horror books from the 90's. You know, from the reign of R.L. Stine. Last week I went, and picked up these babies.  I haven't read these ones yet, but I can't wait to. I'll make sure I keep you guys up on which one of these I'm reading. But for now, I've been busy reading what I bought on my last haul, which was The Babysitter series from R.L. Stine. The Babysitter series from R.L. Stine is about a girl named Jenny who is tormented by a mysteriou[...]

Creature Feature: Aliens, Do you believe?

Do you believe in aliens? If you are any part human, you have at least wondered about the existence of extraterrestrial life. Maybe your idea of alien lifeforms are cute and cuddly, ala E.T. Or perhaps something more along the lines of the monster from the movie Alien. Maybe you gravitate toward the idea that other planetary life might simply consist of plants and micro-organisms. Whatever the case, the possibility that a being who is not human could occupy the universe is both intriguing and chilling. This is what makes alien books, movies, and TV shows so inter[...]
