Psych-Up for School with Horror Movies

Welcome to Odd Sundays with JB! I’ve got some fun features to kick off in September, but for the next couple of Odd Sundays, we’re going to have some fun.

As a movie-lover, I use movies to psych me up for different events. This week, I go back to teaching, so I made a list of horror movies to help kick off the pre-Halloween season.

The Faculty (1998)

The Breakfast Club meets The Body Snatchers. What says, “Welcome Back to School,” better than a film that perpetuates the eroding trust between students and teachers?

Disturbing Behavior (1998)

Footloose meets Stepford Wives. It teaches a powerful lesson about how popular kids are brainwashed and evil.

The Craft (1996)

Footloose meets Carrie. It teaches a lesson about how bullied kids become evil when you make them powerful.

Urban Legend (1998)

National Treasure meets Silence of the Lambs. College students apply the lessons from their folklore class to catch a serial killer.

Let the Right One In (2008)

Twilight meets Basic Instinct. A story of two young outcasts who become friends with very lopsided benefits.

Return to Horror High (1987)

Army of Darkness meets Scream. It’s set in a school, people get killed, and it’s totally ridiculous…in a good way.

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006)

There’s Something About Mary meets Friday the 13th. Mandy Lane gets hot over the summer. Too bad a killer is picking off all the boys that love her one by one.

Apt Pupil (1998)

Karate Kid meets Fright Night. Technically a thriller, but it’s written by Stephen King, so we’ll give it a pass. A boy learns about his neighbor’s Nazi days and tries to bring him down.

Scream (1996)

Clueless meets Halloween. Sidney Prescott realizes she’s “such a bonehead” when she discovers who has been killing all her friends.

Many of these movies contain the same people and were released in the late ’90s. Those were the days! However, I have to be missing some good ones. What other horror movies get you back in the school spirit?

The Craft and the Scream Franchise are some of my favorite movies! But I can’t forget the movie that started it all, Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Kristy Swanson. Not the best movie on the list, but I love watching it. ^_^

I can’t say I like this movie, but I did make it through Jennifer’s Body without changing the channel.

Oh! And remember The Rage: Carrie 2? Was I the only one who watched it? Lol! Again, not great, but I had fun watching it, and I have to say, that crazy tattoo growing all over her face was the absolute best thing my 13 year old eyes ever saw.

I considered Buffy–one of my favorites, especially since it takes place over the course of a school year. Let’s add it!

I’ll have to check out the other two. I made some references to Carrie, so it should definitely go on the list. Have you seen the remake? If you don’t compare it to the original, just to the book, it’s actually pretty good.

I have seen the remake. I agree that it’s good if I don’t compare the two. And of course I love what they did with the special effects!

I’ve seen Scream like, way too many times. And The Craft. I have not seen All the Boys Love Mandy Lane! Have to check it out. I love high school terror. I actually just posted about Heathers before catching up on this week’s posts, but that’s sort of a different realm.
