Black Christmas: I Like a Little Murder with My Popcorn

I love going to the movies and love horror movies, so this week, I took myself to see Black Christmas. The trailers hinted at screaming and running and hiding and killing with sorority girls (AHEM WOMEN) and a creepy masked invader, all wrapped up with Christmas lights. Sounded fun! I went, with no other expectation than to enjoy myself. I did enjoy myself! And left with a head full of thoughts, unusual for a slasher movie, right? The 2019 film, directed by Sophia Takal, and written by Takal and April Wolfe, is the second remake of the 1974 movie Black Christ[...]

Christmas Midnight Society Movie Night: Gremlins and Krampus

Tis the season for happiness and lights and love and...horror! You betcha. I shall continue my tradition of live-tweeting two movies this month, because Christmas time demands it. For a special Midnight Society Movie nights, let's watch Gremlins and Krampus. There's nothing like Christmas horror. Even the season of hope has a dark side.   First, let's watch the chaos unfold as rules are broken and terror invades a town in Gremlins. This 1984 film written by Chris Columbus and directed by Joe Dante delighted me as a child. From adorable Gizmo to terrif[...]

Let’s Talk About Scary

We've all heard it, read it on social media...possibly said it... Don't go see that horror movie. It isn't scary. It bothers me that a vague comment can send us spiraling into doubt. We get sad and disappointed before we even see it, and who needs that? I posted on FB that I was super excited to go see the new movie Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Someone commented, informing me that her teenage girls saw it and said it wasn't scary, so she wasn't going to waste her time. CUE THE BIGGEST SIGH. I have been looking forward to this movie. I STILL WANT to see[...]

IT CAME IN THE MAIL: NIGHT OF THE CREEPS DELUXE LIMITED EDITION

I am not really one for collector's editions, which is mostly because I do not have room in my dork cave for any more stuff. But I do make exceptions, and when I saw there was a Night of the Creeps Deluxe Limited Edition, I pre-ordered it faster than you can "Thrill me!" Today, it arrived--and it's beautiful: I'm a big fan of the original artwork, but this new slipcase with art from Devon Whitehead is just gorgeous. And of course, the two-disc set with both the theatrical and director's cut, as well as tons of extras is great. But let's be honest--the reason I b[...]

Three Weeks…Three Horror Movies

I love horror movies and have my preferred types...everyone does, give me a ghost or demon and I'm a happy kid. Heck, give me a ghost and a demon and I will die of joy. However, I have discovered that my horror movie love spreads across a range of evil. I find enjoyment in quiet creepy and screaming death. I'll happily watch a ghost scare the life out of people or a whole bunch of stabbing. It is rare for me to not like a horror movie, for I can find something, just a sliver of an idea or a super intriguing image, to hold in my dark heart. One of my favorite thin[...]

Midnight Society Movie Night: The Possession of Hannah Grace

Another month means another live-tweet, and I have chosen The Possession of Hannah Grace.   The 2018 thriller/horror film directed by Diederik Van Rooijen hit the theaters last fall and I went. Because why wouldn't I?     As I sat in the theater with my popcorn, I stared at the screen with one big question filling my mind. "What do you bring to the table, Possession of Hannah Grace? I've seen lots of possession movies. So...what do you offer?" So many possession movies exist out there in the world, to release another one seemed risky. I k[...]

Us and the Family Ties that Bind

I keep seeing their faces. Their eyes. Madness radiated from them. The damaged woman. The mother. The final girl. Her face was full of angry, terrifying joy. Her face was twisted by secrets. It's been a couple days since I saw Us, Jordan Peele's latest horror film, and I'm not sure which woman is haunting me more. Us is a story of families, of community, and class. It's also the story of two women and how dangerous they became when cornered, how they defended the life they'd created. Adelaide fights for her family. She clings to them, unwilling to give them[...]

Let’s Talk Horror Movies: The Nun

Am I a little late to talk about The Nun, movie-lovers? Maybe. Or maybe not. Because sometimes movies need a second chance. Sometimes parts of the story we think are missing... aren't. Story by James Wan and Gary Dauberman, The Nun hit theaters September of 2018, AND I RAN TO SEE IT. Could not run fast enough. Seriously. The Conjuring universe is one of my very favorites, and a film dedicated to the creepy nun that haunted the Warrens in The Conjuring 2 sounded perfect. I held my hopes held high and left the theater slightly disappointed. The atmosphere of t[...]

Promises of Horror in the New Year

Happy 2019 everyone! Not only does the New Year hold the promise of a fresh start for each of us personally, but it also means good things coming up in the movie theater and in books. The trend that I see is that horror...well guys, 2019 is all about it! Not only are there quite a few remakes on their way--The Blob (yeah, I know...again) and American Werewolf in London. There is also a list of Stephen King flicks coming out this year--Firestarter, the second half of It, and Pet Cemetery. This is not the complete list of what is coming out, but it gives you just[...]
