Since I’ve started posting about that classic monster of Frankenstein’s here on Wednesdays, I thought it would be a great opportunity to pry open the minds of the other Midnight Society members and see what their favorite classic monsters are! Make sure to let us know what your favorite is in the comments!
What’s your favorite classic horror monster?
I’m a fangirl of bloodsuckers, personally. I loved tracking the progression of the vampire in literature back to the days of Robert Polidori and Sheridan la Fanu, but especially seeing its evolution as a romanticized character with Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He wasn’t just a creature of the night, but a character who’s suffered deeply for love and has damned himself as a result. I remember my first experiences with the vampire dating back even farther to my pre-teen years and Anne Rice’s Lestat. Sexy, dark, and dangerous — tormented. It’s a great combination for a classic monster. Later interpretations like Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend and Agyar by Steven Brust really locked it down for me. Add a little bit of 30 Days of Night (the comic books) and I might as well just open a vein for the next fanged thing that comes knocking at the door, asking to be let in.
My favorite classic horror monster is Dracula:)
I am a big fan of the monster in the novel Frankenstein. But I also like Dorian Gray, who is a lot more mysterious and confusing to me as a reader. But if I had to write about something, it would be the nameless monster in Frankenstein, who is really a twin for Victor.
Ooooh!! I loved Freddy Krueger. He’s classic right? He was so brutal but then he would laugh like a psycho while committing his gruesome crimes. Plus, a crazy man who can attack you through your dreams? You kind of just don’t want to ever sleep after watching Mr. Krueger. And that’s what every horror figure wants to accomplish. Well, done Freddy. Well done.
I have a deep love for classic horror figures!
My favorite classic horror monster is swamp thing / creature from the black lagoon kind of monsters. I love the idea of something lying in wait, not yet discovered, ready to prey on humans. I love monsters that lurk under water! I suppose it is rather morbid but I’ve always had a fascination with monsters who you couldn’t immediately spy with your eye…until of course, it’s too late! Check out this sweet trailer from Creature from the Black Lagoon.

I went back and forth forever trying to think of my favorite. Dracula is probably my favorite… Bram Stoker’s Dracula. So tortured. The Blob (does it count as “classic”?) also scared the crap out of me because HOW CAN YOU FIGHT A BLOB?? YOU CAN’T, REALLY. Also not necessarily “classic”, but one that scared the beejeezus out of me as a kid, was The Fly. The old black and white one. The end scene, where the fly wearing the man’s head is trapped in the spider web screeching “help me!!” haunted my dreams for SO LONG. It still creeps me out thinking about it to this day.
