Til Death Do Us Part–My Favorite Final Couples

pc3a2nico-4-4

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, and all week we’ve been celebrating romance in horror here on the site. I’ll be continuing that trend today with a look at three of my favorite final couples. These are the couple that weathered the proverbial storm, survived the horror, maybe even defeated the ultimate evil. However they got there, at the end of the day they were still standing, and I like to think their love was stronger for it. So without further ado, here are three of my favorite final couples.

Nick and Elizabeth–The Fog (1980)
The Fog features two of my all-time favorite actors in a movie by my favorite director. What I love most about Tom Atkins and Jamie Lee Curtis in The Fog is that they are not your typical movie couple. Atkins’ Nick Castle happens to be driving through town, and Curtis’ Elizabeth Solley is the hitchhiker he picks up. They have just enough time to sleep with each other before they find themselves stuck in an nightmare of undead pirates. But after a first weekend like that, you know they ended up together forever.

Fun facts: The detective in Harrowed–the first book in our Woodsview Murders series–is inspired by another character Tom Atkins played in the 1986 classic Night of the Creeps. Another character in Harrowed shares the last name of Jamie Lee Cutis’ character in Halloween.

Steve and Diane Freeling–Poltergeist (1984)

Poltergeist, is the movie that simultaneously scarred me for life and made me a horror fan. The clown scene is still one of my top three all-time terrifying scenes, and watching that dude pull his face apart in the mirror was equally horrifying. But Poltergeist also features one of the best onscreen couples you find in any film–Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams. Their portrayal of Steve and Diane Freeling felt so genuine, and they’re love for each other and their kids is the core of this movie for me.

Fun fact: One of the inspirations for Avery’s mom in Harrowed is Diane Freeling, cause she’s such a super cool mom.

Scream01

Gale and Dewey–Scream series (1996-2011)

This is probably my favorite movie couple of all time. I adore Gale and Dewey, and the fact that they made it through four movies only makes me love the Scream series even more. I will be honest–I was a little heartbroken when David Arquette and Courtney Cox got divorced. Their chemistry on and off the screen just seemed so great. They were one of the few Hollywood couples I actually gave a crap about. But Dewey and Gale will always be together, and that’s why the Scream series will be one I come back to again and again.

Fun fact: Jason and Avery in Harrowed are inspired in no small part by Dewey and Gale.

Gale and Dewey! I love them. I can totally see how you drew inspiration for Harrowed, too!

Thanks! We have so many Easter eggs in HARROWED that I’ve forgotten a ton of them. Maybe we’ll do an annotated version at some point.
