Staying Home? No Problem. We Have TV!

It’s scary out there, horror friends. A spreading virus. Social distancing. Quarantine. So we search for entertainment as we settle in our homes with our TVs and computers.

I thought I’d share some shows I’ve found to keep us from focusing on all the weirdness in the world.

Poster for Netflix show Locke and Key

The first season of Locke and Key, based on the graphic novels Locke and Key, hit Netflix in February of 2020. I completely enjoyed the first season! The Locke house is wondrous and full of magic and keys that do the most amazing (and slightly creepy) things! I loved the characters. The show is beautiful. The story unfolds at the perfect pace, revealing secret after secret. All wrapped up with a fabulously evil echo, who is quite the trickster.

The enchanting tale, gorgeous images, and ever so disturbing ideas swept me away.

January 2020, ShudderTV gave us The Dead Lands, a fantasy/horror series with the ancient Maori tribe of New Zealand and based on the 2014 movie The Dead Lands. The dead can’t cross into the afterlife, because the world is broken, the barrier between the light and dark has shattered, the way from life to the afterlife impassable. So we need a hero to fix the world.

To me, it has a Xena vibe. *waits for everyone to look at me like I have three heads* Really! Waka (Xena) with Mehe (Gabrielle) tagging along, learning how to fight. I’m very interested in the story, how they can fix the world, how Waka can earn his honor so he’ll be accepted by his ancestors into the afterlife. I like the zombie characters, not slow, but fast and seriously angry. I’ve watched the first two episodes and enjoy its touches of humor mixed with the fighting and beheading. And I can listen to the accent all day.

Motherland: Fort Salem premiered last night (Wednesday, March 18th) on Freeform.

What if…instead of the Salem witch trials, there was a Salem accord where the witches offered to fight the USA’s enemies with their powers for peace? In this alternate reality tale, an army of witches guards the USA, and we enter the story on conscription day and three girls who are about to join the army and head off to basic training. Three very different girls.

One episode and I’m in. The premise is fascinating. The characters each face their own fears and pasts, traumas and expectations. I’m ready for magic. I’m ready for drama. I’m ready to see the story unfold.

Not a series…but this one has been calling to me. The Room came out this month and sounds so intriguing.

A couple move into a new house. This house has a room, one that will grant any wish.

And I’m sure nothing can possibly go wrong.

The commercials have me dying to see this.

So, take care! And entertain yourself with the creepy and weird and wondrous. Leave a comment with any of your favorite movies and shows!

And if you need something to do tonight…

Find me on Twitter at 9 PM EST for the live-tweet of The Changeling for Midnight Society Movie Night! I’ll be on #MidnightSocietyMovieNight and #TheChangeling for a fun night of creepiness. Enjoy all my tweets, or watch and tweet with me!

Stay safe out there, horror friends.

Cheers and nightmares,

Kathy
