Predator

If it bleeds, we can kill it. A friend and coworker posted this quote on Facebook. And I was immediately curious over whether or not the current political climate had pushed him over the edge. What I didn't know was that this is a famous line from the 1987 movie, Predator. He quickly set me straight. I will be bombarding him with quotes from the movie as I watch--be warned they might also find their way to Twitter and Facebook, too:) For those of you who have never seen Predator, I've posted the trailer below. I haven't seen this movie since it came out. This i[...]

Halloween is Coming!

HALLOWEEN IS COMING!!! Yes, you read that correctly. And yes, I know that Halloween is over 2 months away but there's something special happening this year. The remake of Rocky Horror Picture Show will preview on FOX. I'm old enough to have experienced the original film in the theater. I know, I don't look a day over...Enough of that. I remember standing in line with costumed fans and watching them act out the film, bringing it all to life. I am so excited that a new generation will get to enjoy Rocky Horror Picture Show, whether it's new or the original film (I[...]

Stranger Things

If you have been anywhere on social media lately, I'm sure you've heard about the Netflix show, Stranger Things. Winona Ryder stars in this horror series, one that is very reminiscent of 80s movies. I mean, back then there was little technology so directors used music to create tension. Without that famous score, how else did you know that Jason was about to come out and grab a new victim? From posters celebrating hits from the 80s, to the dangling phone receiver, to the creepy white van that drives down the street--Stranger Things brings back real fear using the[...]

Blair Witch 2016

In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. This is the first line of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT movie trailer. Yeah. I remember when THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT released in 1999. Everyone, including me, believed the marketing plan of three college students who go into the woods and end up shooting footage of their hauntings and untimely deaths. S.C.A.R.Y. The shakey camera footage helped to solidfy this idea in the minds of the viewers. I absolutely loved this film and now...ther[...]

A Criterion Collection J-Horror Example

I work part time in a bookstore. One that not only sells books, but if you're a music and movie aficionado there is a huge selection for you. With J-Horror month, I of course asked one of our movie guys if we had any DVDs I could buy and watch to school myself on this type of horror. He looked at me and I heard crickets. The guy who knows just about any book or movie I put in my hand, had no idea what J-Horror was. After I showed him my first post, the lightbulb went on and we went searching. He gave me four titles that we carry in the Criterian Collection. Only[...]

Writing Bloody- J Horror

I am a complete J-Horror novice, but as a horror writer I'm always researching the craft of writing. Finding out how others write and reading their advice helps to make you a better writer. So when we began talking about J-Horror, the first thing I did was research what the heck that meant. Now? I want to know what the differences and similarities are in writing. There are quite a few posts coming up this month by my friends who know a lot about J-Horror, so stay tuned for more fun! For now, here's my simple take on J-Horror writing vs. Western novels... Tradit[...]

What is J Horror?

July is J Horror Month! If you're anything like me, you're wondering what the heck J horror even is. Before we get into the whole fun of this particular brand of horror, how about a definition and a couple of examples to sink your teeth on? Wikipedia Definition: Japanese horror is Japanese horror fiction in popular culture, noted for its unique thematic and conventional treatment of the horror genre in light of western treatments. Clear as mud? I thought so. J horror has been around since the 1940-50s. The first movies were stories that incorportated Japa[...]

Mr. King Does it Again!

It's no secret who one of my favorite horror authors is...if you don't know, here are just two posts I've written about him. Go on. Check them out, I'll wait. http://wp.me/p4n7GW-gq http://wp.me/p4n7GW-D6 Meeting Stephen King is on my bucket list. Honestly, this is the only thing on my bucket list, so I've been completely jealous of those who are posting pics of seeing him speak. No matter, I still got a hold of a copy of his latest in the Bill Hodges Trilogy. With each new story he writes, I'm struck by the masterful way he weaves the lives of his characters[...]

Edgar Allan Poe- The Master of Gothic Horror

Hey everyone! I've been gone for quite awhile, and I have missed you all! My life has taken a few twists and turns, so I needed to take some time away. Buuutttt, now I'm back! And what a time to blog...gothic horror month! It's not a secret that I am a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe. I mean, I do have a raven tattoo on my wrist! Every year, I'm lucky enough to have Poe as part of my curriculum. Teaching 8th graders about this fascinating and disturbed man; along with sharing his famous writings, is what I look forward to each year. And while I love all of his stori[...]

RT Book Lover Convention 2016

For those of you who don’t follow me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram you may have missed all of my crazy posts last week. Kathy Palm and I were roomies at RT Vegas!!! Yes, I understand that RT stands for Romantic Times and that we are a horror blog. But I have a confession…I am a closet romance reader. Alright, this isn’t necessarily true. What I do enjoy is romance with a side of horror, which it turns out—I write. Kathy has lovingly deemed this genre “romantic horror”. So many amazing authors joined in talks about pushing boundaries in YA and c[...]
