Urban Legend of Kuchisake-Onna

Our theme for the month of May is urban legends! YAY! I've been watching the TV show, Constantine and have found many urban legends intertwined in the show. One of my favorites is the one involving Kuchisake-Onna...aka the slit-mouthed woman. The story has it that a beautiful Japanese woman cheated on her samurai husband. In a jealous rage, he cuts her mouth open with a pair of scissors. Giving her a permanently haneous smile, he asks her, "Who will think you're beautiful now?" The woman dies and then returns as a malevolent spirit known as Kuchisake-Onna, the[...]

Sunnydale Cemetery

The Sunnydale Cemetery was Buffy Summer's playground. Night after night, she's patrol and take down the newly undead as they rose from their graves. What many don't know, is where these scenes were actually filmed. Ever wonder with the cast felt about the cemetery scenes? E News has recently shared Sarah Michelle Gellar's feelings on the subject: In the beginning of the series, the cemetery was actally built and scenes shot in the studio staff parking lot. Sarah Michelle Gellar had a real fear of cemeteries, crying hysterically after filming an episode where[...]

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I'm sure you read the title of my post and questioned why I sound so excited...we're usually a little more bloody around here. I'll get to that in a second, but first let me explain. This year is different. Kind of. This year is all about starting over and making new memories. Today, my boyfriend and I are celebrating anti-Valentine's Day style. Every day, at least in my humble opinion, should be Valentine's Day. Celebrating your relationship with love and kindness should not just be a focus one day of the year. Spending time together is the whole point of the d[...]

Hearts

February is almost here. Which means Valentine's Day is almost here. The Midnight Society celebrates this holiday in a very special way. But before we get into that, how about we talk about the one symbol that is the antithesis of the day? The heart. In horror, the heart is often mangled and bloody--ripped out of some poor soul's chest. But it can also be a symbol of love and darkness, evil and romance. Whatever it's meaning to you, there are amazing images that you can find online to bring on the writing muse. Need a little inspiration today? Check out our he[...]

M. Night Shyamalan- SPLIT

I LOVE a good psychological horror. One that curls your toes and has you peeking through your fingers because it's THAT scary. We all know that clowns and movie dolls terrifies me, but a main characters having multiple personalities? THAT IS FREAKING SCARY!! I mean, it could happen in real life! It looks like M. Night Shyamalan has done it again with SPLIT. The antagonist, Kevin, has 23 different personalities; with one still unrevealed. Abducting three teenage girls is just the beginning of this terrifying journey to discovering the beast waiting to come out.[...]

Doll Head Crafts

Dolls creep me out. Well, they did until a funny thing happened...I found a few photos online that got my attention. The first was a doll head that had been make into a pencil sharpener. I just HAD to have this, but after a little research I found that it was not to be. I set upon finding a doll head, so that I could make my own. What I found instead was a wonderful head to hold my pens. Yes. You heard that correctly and here's the photo to prove it! I used the rollers as pen holders in the dolls hair. I completely creeped my kids out, but I had a new collect[...]

Welcome 2017!

2016 kicked my butt. Slayed me. And then at the end, I was revived. By a human. Sound like anyone else we know?? Come on, you know I had to reference Buffy. If I didn't, I wouldn't be me. 2017 will be different. I am back. I will do the slaying. So look the hell out. xoxo,  [...]

Dolls in Horror

Dolls and clowns. That's what I find VERY scary. There's a fascinating history about the hows and whys dolls scare people. Some believe that because they look so human, that we can't balance this with fact. The fact is that dolls are plastic toys, originally made for little girls to practice their social niceties on. Not to mention the fact that dolls do NOT age well. While humans get better with age, dolls tend to get creepier and creepier looking--hair breaks and falls out, skin loses color, eyes stop working, etc. I've posted many times about my third grade ex[...]

Happy Birthday Anne Rice!

Happy Birthday Anne Rice! Today is Anne Rice’s birthday, so what better way to celebrate our favorite month than to toast an amazing horror writer?! Absolutely. Nothing. Anne Rice (whose birth name is Howard) was born October 4, 1941, in New Orleans, Lousiana. Her first book, Interview with the Vampire was published in 1976. THIS put her on the map of horror! In 1996, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise starred in the movie of the same name. I totally remember THIS movie having a fantastic impact on my love of all things vampire. So today, let's raise a glass an[...]

American Horror Story Season 6

Dolls. They are the first thing I boxed up and threw in the attic after watching Poltergeist, and now I have a few heads hanging around. Who would have thought I'd be decorating with dolls as an adult. As far as I'm concerned, dolls have been used in films for one reason. They. Are. Scary. As. Hell. So, of course AHS would choose to feature a talking and bleeding doll and creepy black spiders. I mean, why not? I am super excited to see what Lady Gaga does this season. Haven't seen the trailer? Check this out![...]
