Moonlight TV Show

At home for a few days with sick kids, who then got me sick--so thankful they feel the need to share their germs--I got a little bored with what was available to stream. A while ago, I had downloaded the CW Seed app to my Apple TV so I could watch Constantine (see my Constantine TV post here and Brian's Constantine comic post here). After this, I didn't pay the rest of the shows any attention. So sick kids and mom rediscovers the app. Following? It seems as though 2006/07 were the comercial comeback years for vampires. Stephanie Meyer brought us sparkly Edward[...]

Vampires & Ancient Egypt: A Blood-Curdling Combination

I have mentioned before how obsessed I am with Ancient Egypt. But my love of dark things doesn't stop there. The Vampire Chronicles When I was in high school, I quickly got hooked On Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles series. The rich language, the intriguing characters, and the otherworldly stories made it easy to fall in love with the books. Luckily for me, it didn't take long for my two loves to combine. In both The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned, there is mention of the very first vampires, Queen Akasha and King Enkil, who ruled Egypt. However, they[...]

Poor Polidori: Granddad of the contemporary vampire

In the summer of 1816, a group of artists, poets, and friends gathered together at the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva in Swizerland. Sounds quaint enough. So here’s the dirt, and I’m paraphrasing liberally from a couple of different sources: Mary Shelly’s step-sister, Claire Clairmont, had the idea: she was hooking up with Lord Byron and even though he wasn’t really feeling it, she decided to “surprise” him in Swizerland though he never really invited her along for the trip. With her, Claire brought Mary and her main squeeze, Percy, along for kicks. Pe[...]

The Subtle Art of Impaling

Hello, lovelies!!!   Happy Friday before Halloween! Past Jenna would be marinating skittles in vodka right now and piecing together a road map of debauchery. Present Jenna just picked out matching Halloween costumes for her husband and son and is already scoping out hiding spots for leftover candy. My, how things change. This past week has been all about Vampires! I love me some Vampires. Like many others, good old Twilight started me on my writing path, though I do prefer my vampires to be of the non-sparkling variety. So! What shall we talk about? Famous[...]

Freebie: Midnight Society Letterhead (free download!)

I'm quite the ephemerist. I love old papers and documents. I collect them. It's a kind of sickness really, because every single paper good I find and love, I buy. If you've ever looked inside my writing desk that's filled to the brim, you know it's true. So I thought it would be fun to make my own stationary today and share it with all of you! Below is Midnight Society letterhead (US 8.5 X 11 inches) that you can print out and use for all of your otherworldly, nefarious, and undead business letters. You can download this for free below in two different colors, p[...]

Welcome to Vampire Week!

As you know from Faith's October 1st post, we have a variety of themed weeks this October. Though October is nearing its end, the fun is just beginning! I love vampires so much and I'm so happy for vampire week. I tried to recall the first time I'd ever heard about vampires. I'm thinking Halloween-time. I was raised on horror and my dad loved to tell me scary stories. Oddly, when I was thinking about this post, I realized that I didn't read a lot of vampire fiction. I've read some, sure, but not enough to classify myself as an expert. What is your favorite[...]

Happy Birthday Anne Rice!

Happy Birthday Anne Rice! Today is Anne Rice’s birthday, so what better way to celebrate our favorite month than to toast an amazing horror writer?! Absolutely. Nothing. Anne Rice (whose birth name is Howard) was born October 4, 1941, in New Orleans, Lousiana. Her first book, Interview with the Vampire was published in 1976. THIS put her on the map of horror! In 1996, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise starred in the movie of the same name. I totally remember THIS movie having a fantastic impact on my love of all things vampire. So today, let's raise a glass an[...]

American Horror Story: Hotel is Bizarre and Sexy…

...and I love it. **Caution: slight spoilers ahead**     In case you missed it, American Horror Story Hotel premiered this week and it was UH-MAY-ZING!! Let me start by saying that I just love the tone that this first episode set up for the rest of the season. It is SO dark and grotesque but also sexy and mysterious too. I was definitely given a sense that this season will be very different from all four of the previous seasons of the anthology show and after watching on Wednesday I can say I think that this is going to be an unforgettable season[...]

Vampy Goodness – Who Was Your First?

I was nine years old when Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired, and I hid in a guest room, blocked the door, and watched it with the television turned down so low I had to keep my ear a few inches from the set. There was that warning in the beginning of the show, about it being for viewers 14 and up, and damned if I was going to run the risk of missing out on this. All these years later, and I still don't go a month without watching an episode. Honestly, it's pretty weird to go a week. I watch it over breakfast, the perfect start to my day. Buffy and I have been[...]

What I’m Thankful for: Horror Edition Part 2

It's almost my favorite day of the year...Thanksgiving. Not all of the family will be at the house this year. We'll be missing my sister and brother-in-law, but I'll still have 16 of my loved ones all under the same roof. Cooking for this many is a lot of work, but I still love hosting this celebration. Last week, the planning of this huge dinner was just a label for a new board on Pinterest. Today I type Part 2 of my thankful post with the aroma of pecan pie swirling in the air. Yum! What I'm Thankful for: 6.  The CW I know last week I gave a shout out for the[...]
