The Midnight Book Club Takes on SLEEPING BEAUTIES for #FrighteningFall

Put your reading glasses on, kids. This week, Stephen and Owen King's new epic Sleeping Beauties was releases, and The Midnight Society is making it our book club selection for our Frightening Fall event. For the months of October and November, we'll be reading and discussing Sleeping Beauties as part of our Midnight Book Club. We'll be holding two chat events--one in October and one in November (dates/times TBA)--and we'll be using the hashtag #MidnightBookClub. We'll also be talking about the book throughout the next two months using the hashtags #Frighteni[...]

Today Was a Really Good Day at CT HorrorFest

I tried to think of a clever title for this post, but I'm exhausted, and honestly, that title pretty much sums it up. See, i spent the day at CT HorrorFest, which is my favorite show of the year. Not only is it a fantastic celebration of horror, but the show is put together by my friends at the Horror News Network, who are some of the nicest and most genuine people I am lucky enough to know. Each year I go to their show and hang out all day talking about horror and music with anyone that passes my table. Occasionally I will sell some books as well, but I've never[...]

The Summer of Screams Is Ending, But the Frightening Fall Has Just Begun!

We here at the Midnight Society had a blast celebrating the Summer of Screams. Not only was there an amazing writing and art showcase hosted by our amazing founder Jolene Haley (which you can check out here), but my fellow Midnighter Kathy Palm and I live-tweeted three flicks from my favorite franchise ever, Friday the 13th! In fact, we had so much fun that we can't stop just because summer is over. So, welcome to the Frightening Fall. We'll be live-tweeting more Friday the 13ths, as well as some of our favorite '80s horror flicks, throughout the next few mont[...]

Summer of Screams–Join Us for JASON LIVES on 8/30!!

The Summer of Screams concludes this week, and we're going out with a bang. Actually, it's more like a slice, or a  slash, or--well, you get it. For those who haven't been keeping up, the Summer of Screams is the writing and art showcase our fearless leader Jolene Haley has been running all month over on her site. To celebrate the cam-themed horror stories that have been going up all month, my fellow midnighter Kathy Palm and I have been live-tweeting some of our favorite Friday the 13th movies. We've done the original, we've done The Final Chapter, and we'r[...]

The Final Girl

How lucky are we over here at the Midnight Society that we get to celebrate two birthdays in a row?!! Today, we rented out a haunted library so we could throw a party for Amy Giuffrida! Amy is a superhero, and one of her powers is that she is always on top of what's happening with all the members of the Midnight Society. If one of us puts out a new story, releases a book, or just has news to share, she is always among the first to congratulate and cheerlead for us. She is a constant source of support for all. So Amy, we've all brought some terrifyingly awesome[...]

It’s a Monster Mash

Everybody head down to the graveyard--it's party time! Today is a very special day, because it's the birthday of my partner in crime, the Midnight Society matriarch--Jolene Haley! None of us would be here without you, Jolene, and we've brought some creeptastic gifts to show you how much we care. Jolene, not only are you an amazing friend, but I probably wouldn't still be writing if it weren't for you. I'm extra lucky, because I get to write with you, which is one of the great joys in my life. And since we're getting ready to unleash our next book Haunted upon[...]

Music to Write Scary Stories To: NTYZ by Silencaeon

For the past few weeks, I've been busting tail on edits for a novella set in my Parted Veil universe. The series pulls heavily on the Dreamlands stories of H.P. Lovecraft as well as Robert Chambers' The King in Yellow. This particular novella is bringing back the characters from the first book in the series, Courting the King in Yellow. It's sort of catching readers up on the activities of those characters, while also exploring how they've been changed by the events of CtKiY. I've talked a lot about some of my favorite writing soundtracks in the past, and my[...]

Midnight Review: They Look Like People

Having seen and loved everything from Invasion of the Body Snatchers to The Thing to The Hidden, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I was in for when I started watching Perry Blackshear’s They Look Like People. I was wrong. https://youtu.be/MrsUOmKlAzI They Look Like People is psychological horror at its best. The movie establishes a level of tension in the opening scene that becomes the baseline for the entire film. Of course things get way more tense from there, but after that opening scene, the tension level never returns to normal. This movie is[...]

The Best Birthday Gift Ever–HARROWED!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again--Jolene Haley is amazing. And this past week, she gave me the best birthday present ever--a print proof of our book Harrowed. If you follow Jolene or I at all, then you know we're hard at work on getting Haunted (the second book in the Woodsview Murders series) ready for release. But Harrowed will always be our first love, and we still have big plans for our first book, and one of those plans is a print edition. Jolene and I had talked about the print version, and had done some preliminary work (or so I thought) on forma[...]

THE YELLOW KING–An RPG Made Just For Me

The Yellow King Roleplaying Game may be my most anticipated game of all time. I grew up on Dungeons & Dragons, and I have collected roleplaying game books for years. Many of them I haven't even played, I just absolutely love reading about different world, game mechanics and adventure ideas. As a writer, roleplaying games have been a huge influence on me (just read my Parted Veil series), and writing for a roleplaying game is a bucket list item for me. In short--I love roleplaying games. I also love horror, and Robert Chambers' The King in Yellow (get it f[...]
