Long Story Short

Three nights ago I was looking at my to-finish-reading pile and I had a revelation. There's a reason these awesome, best-selling, indie, award-winning books have been collecting dust for the past seven years. I don't want to finish reading them. And it hurts my heart. It has nothing to do with the quality of writing. These are amazing stories from debut and established authors, alike. I even tried tricking my brain into thinking they were gifts (hence the wrapping paper) so I'd stop buying MOAR books that I won't even get to for another year. Instead, two[...]

The Fluff of Nightmares

I had a bad dream last night. I don't remember too much about it, except that my late father was there and something about pie. It wasn't great. Kind of scary, actually. This got me thinking about the dreams and nightmares that have never left me. Here are my top seven: 7. Forest Island (Age 12): There's this dense pine forest and a lake with an island. I need to get to the island but the only way is to cross this rickety bridge that disappears as I walk. Oh, and I'd be stranded forever if I do. This was such a vivid dream that when I woke up I drew it (see[...]

The Tale of The Happenstance Horrigin

When I learned our theme for December was horror origins, my first thought was to my own. Not to the fascinating origins of genre or admirable authors or filmmakers, but to me. My own. My precious, precious origin in horror. Horror origin. A horroigin, if you will. What is my horrigin and how did it get me here, to the incredible support network that is the writers and readers of The Midnight Society? And then I realized, too few people know the whole story. So. Submitted for the approval of The Midnight Society, I call this story The Tale of the Happensta[...]

Interview with The Davis Girl

While I'm still deciding on if I should write and publish under my married name or not, I had a chance to check in with my inner child, The Davis Girl. Coming all the way from 1987, here she is with what looks like a plate of cupcakes with the frosting licked off. Me: Hi, The Davis Girl, thanks for joining me today! The Davis Girl: Don't have much choice, do I? Me: Not at all. So, why do you write horror? The Davis Girl: Well, if I don't, how will they know what to do? Me: What? The Davis Girl: What. Me: Ok. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?[...]

GIFspirations: The Other Post

A few aeons ago my best friend and I would jog together. Now I am no runner, but I could jog nice and slow and it wasn't that awful. Usually. Some days it was even great. But other days, ugh. It was rough. Maybe it was something I ate. Maybe it was dehydration, but something pushed me down. Physically. Mentally and emotionally I was ready to run, but once in a while...it was what my friend still refers to the five-ton man run. To her, it felt like she had a five ton man on her back. That's me today. Not for running, but writing. This post has had me dragging[...]

Seven Films that Scared the Ghosts Out of Me

This week has been something else. I wash my hands of it. When I have a week like this, I've learned to build in down time. And tonight, I do so by thinking about what I want to watch this weekend. My goal is to go through any and all of these seven gems which--for one reason or another--scared the ghosts right out of me the first time I saw them. And then some. #7: THE BOY. Discovered it when I recognized that girl from the zombie show. Holy fekking sheeeet. The only thing worse than a doll is a doll that may or may not be possessed. https://www.youtube.com/w[...]

For the Love of ZomBea’s Boutique: A Sneaky Little Preview (Part 1 of 2)

A while back, I happened to see this little beauty on Twitter and it made my graceless heart skip a beat. So I went to the original poster's twitter page and BAM! There was Bea. And I was hooked. As a lover of all things handmade, I had to check out this Etsy shop for myself.              And it was glorious.  It's called ZomBea's Boutique and it is run by Bea, from a magical place called Wells! Instantly obsessed, and in despearate need to know more about Bea, and Bea's Etsy shop, and Bea's mad sk[...]

I am an Adult and So Can You: 13 Things That Happened This Week

There's something happening here and I'm scared. Over the past seven days at least 13 things have happened which lead me to believe my adulting game may be leveling up. 13. I took the first step towards a making a doctor's appointment which I have been avoiding for about a decade. 12. I outlined the next ten posts for my blog. 11. I applied to be a local chapter leader for a non-fiction writing organization. 10. I researched information for the marketing section of my non-fiction book proposal. 9. I started a load of laundry AND switched it to the[...]
