It’s A Bleeder Read-Along With Monica Kuebler

Author Monica Kuebler started her Blood Magic series in 2012 with an online serial called Bleeder posted to Wattpad. The book ended up expanding into 4, and now has over 628K Reads on Wattpad. It’s obvious the horror/romance/paranormal/vampire YA series has touched a nerve with readers looking for a modern blood-soaked saga. Haven’t read any of the books in the series? You can start at the beginning by joining Monica as she hosts a read-along of Bleeder over the next few weeks. As Monica reads through the book that started it all, she will be sharing offi[...]

Dracula’s Origins: A Vampire Story in Romania

Things I'd like to ask Bram Stoker: What was the true inspiration for Dracula? It's possibly the most common question writers are asked. Everyone wants to know where a writer gets their ideas, and the writer often struggles to come up with a satisfying answer. But the history surrounding Dracula's origins makes the question irresistible! So who was it inspiring such terror in Eastern Europe that could have sparked something in Stoker? Was it Vlad the Impaler? He's certainly a solid and popular possibility. But there's also Countess Elizabeth Báthory, who has a[...]

Moonlight TV Show

At home for a few days with sick kids, who then got me sick--so thankful they feel the need to share their germs--I got a little bored with what was available to stream. A while ago, I had downloaded the CW Seed app to my Apple TV so I could watch Constantine (see my Constantine TV post here and Brian's Constantine comic post here). After this, I didn't pay the rest of the shows any attention. So sick kids and mom rediscovers the app. Following? It seems as though 2006/07 were the comercial comeback years for vampires. Stephanie Meyer brought us sparkly Edward[...]

Blog Tour: Monsterland by Michael Okon

Hello boys and ghouls, Welcome to Monsterland, the scariest place on earth. When I first heard of this book, I had some serious RL Stine vibes in my head. One Day at Horrorland, anyone? Which was exciting for me because I freaking love RL Stine and I was pumped that someone else was writing a story about a dangerous theme park filled with monsters... Seriously, that would be like a dream date. This concept has been done with Jurassic Park or Westworld, but it hasn't really been done in YA before, with vampires and werewolves. I was super excited about this book[...]

Vampires & Ancient Egypt: A Blood-Curdling Combination

I have mentioned before how obsessed I am with Ancient Egypt. But my love of dark things doesn't stop there. The Vampire Chronicles When I was in high school, I quickly got hooked On Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles series. The rich language, the intriguing characters, and the otherworldly stories made it easy to fall in love with the books. Luckily for me, it didn't take long for my two loves to combine. In both The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned, there is mention of the very first vampires, Queen Akasha and King Enkil, who ruled Egypt. However, they[...]

Poor Polidori: Granddad of the contemporary vampire

In the summer of 1816, a group of artists, poets, and friends gathered together at the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva in Swizerland. Sounds quaint enough. So here’s the dirt, and I’m paraphrasing liberally from a couple of different sources: Mary Shelly’s step-sister, Claire Clairmont, had the idea: she was hooking up with Lord Byron and even though he wasn’t really feeling it, she decided to “surprise” him in Swizerland though he never really invited her along for the trip. With her, Claire brought Mary and her main squeeze, Percy, along for kicks. Pe[...]

I'm quite the ephemerist. I love old papers and documents. I collect them. It's a kind of sickness really, because every single paper good I find and love, I buy. Below is Midnight Society letterhead (US 8.5 X 11 inches) that you can print out and use for all of your otherworldly, nefarious, and undead business letters. You can download this for free below in two different colors, p[...]

Vampy Goodness – Who Was Your First?

I was nine years old when Buffy the Vampire Slayer first aired, and I hid in a guest room, blocked the door, and watched it with the television turned down so low I had to keep my ear a few inches from the set. There was that warning in the beginning of the show, about it being for viewers 14 and up, and damned if I was going to run the risk of missing out on this. All these years later, and I still don't go a month without watching an episode. Honestly, it's pretty weird to go a week. I watch it over breakfast, the perfect start to my day. Buffy and I have been[...]

The Strain

This weekend, my Direct TV box went dark. Very, very dark. Although I can watch everything I've recorded, I can't watch regular TV or record any of my shows. Which totally sucks. I've missed THE WALKING DEAD and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, just to name a few. In preparation for returning this box and in order to get it replaced with a new one, I've been binge watching what I have already saved. Some shows I deleted. I can't watch everything, so I deleted many things I can live without seeing. One show I kept to watch is THE STRAIN. I'm not quite sure why I never wat[...]
