Let’s Talk About Ideas: Our Answers

So last week, I posted a few questions for us all to think about. Horror writers have to be inspired by something to get the story ideas that they cultivate into scary novels and films. But the question is, where? How? And just so you know, not all horror writers are crazy;) So, for all of you out there that wonder where the hell it all begins...here are a few answers: Where do your ideas for a new story come from? 1. My ideas come from taking all the things I love and slamming them together until they work. 2.  My brain is sort of always marinating in a 80s ste[...]

Let’s Talk About Ideas

You think writing a unique story is tough? Try writing a different and plot twisty horror. But if this is truly your love, let's talk about ideas. I mean it...let's talk. I'm opening up the first Tuesday of the month to horror writing related questions and answers. We are a community and we'd love to have more interaction with lovers of horror stories. How will this work? 1.  I'll post new writing questions on the first Tuesday of the month. That means, you can either ask us questions in the comment section, on Facebook, or on Twitter at anytime, but I'll post[...]

How to Write New Adult Horror

Okay, this title may be a tad misleading. There is no way I will tell you HOW to write, let alone how to write horror. However, there are some things to keep in mind when writing horror in the NA category. Keep in Mind the Age of Your Characters NA characters are to be college age--meaning 18-25ish. This doesn't mean they have to be in college, but at the very least they should be out on their own for the first time. The main character in my story actually turns 18 and begins her journey into full time employment. Your Characters Should be Having New Experiences M[...]

New Adult

Since I recently self-published my debut NA psychological horror, The Bleeding Heart, I've been thinking a lot about what new adult is, what it means to me, and how it's perceived in the publishing world. Why? Because unless I'm talking to another writer or someone in the book industry, new adult is a completely foreign term and I've had to explain it to quite a few people. I have found a niche in new adult horror, so I decided to dedicate my posts on our blog to this category and genre of literature. I hope you join me in the celebration:) Before we can move o[...]

Online Collaboration: hitRECord

I happened on a video one day while trolling through Facebook. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (love him by the way) has created an online collaborative production company; one that is begging for writers, editors, artist, and musicians to come together and create. HOW COOL IS THIS? Not only is this a TV show, but also an online community. All you writers out there can participate in the Weekly Writing Challenge! Want a taste of the prompts? Here's WEEK 35's CHALLENGE: Write a comedy story about a person who becomes non-human. *The Deadline for Week 35's Challenge is Mond[...]

Horror, Comics, and Graphic Novels

As many of you know, I work part time at a brick and mortar book store. Being a bookseller, blogger, author, and social media surfer--I get a front seat to the current trends. Some I can see coming from a mile away, while others seeming come from out of nowhere. And guys, the horror genre is DEFINITELY on the rise! Once upon a time, comic books were collected by a distinct group of people. When I was a teenager, it wasn't cool to read comics. But now? It's waaaaaay cool to be spotted with a graphic novel in your bag. And let me tell you, with the rise in Marvel a[...]

BEA 2015 Horror Edition

Each year I merrily make my way to NYC for BEA. For three whole days, I submerge myself in the book life and every time I make new friends and get fantastic books. This year was no exception; however, there were a handful of thrilling new things that happened and I can't help but share them. 1. I got my hands on an amazing ARC of new YA horror! Look at the inside...soooo cool!   2. THIS BOOK may not necessarily be considered horror, but seriously kick ass protagonist...yes, please!                 3. I[...]

Reboot of IT Circles the Drain

I took a deep breathe when I saw this Tweet yesterday: Stephen King @StephenKing · May 25 The remake of IT may be dead--or undead--but we'll always have Tim Curry. He's still floating down in the sewers of Derry. 2,473 retweets 4,280 favorites Reply Retweet2.5K Favorite4.3K Oh my! You all know that It is my favorite Stephen King book, and that Pennywise had me scared to death of clowns (which I saw after I performed as a clown in my high school's production of Barnum). I was ridiculously interested in how a new version would look, even though I don't think[...]

Sorry I’m Late to the Grimm Party

I love watching TV and movies. Obviously. But what you don't know is that recently, my family and I decided NOT to pay outrageous fees to have cable. I won't go on a ridiculous rant, but I will say this...Netflix downloads have cost me a TON of money because my internet provider CHARGES ME FOR GOING OVER 250 DURING PEAK TIMES. AND OF COURSE THIS IS 5 PM TO 1 AM. I'm finished. I promise. And for those that are asking why I don't just change internet services. I can't. There is only one, unless I want to go back to the Stone Age of dial up--and that will NEVER ha[...]

Carrie Ryan and the Trip That’s Almost Here

With BEA a mere two weeks away, I'm finding it hard to focus on every day tasks. I mean, come on. What could be better that 4 days in New York, books, authors, friends, etc?! The one stressful part is just how to get around to see all of the amazing authors. My first year, I met Melissa Marr. I actually stood in line for 2 hours just to make sure to get an ARC of Carnival of Souls. Last year, I was thrilled to finally meet Holly Black--The Darkest Part of the Forest. I mean, come on...Holly and I had matching hair! How much cooler can you get? Talk about two awe[...]
