Psychological Horror 101

This week, I feel like I need to write about something very close to my heart. As some of you may have seen, I am self-publishing a NA psychological horror. Some folks out there don't feel like this type of writing should be considered horror, rather they choose to name it a thriller or dark contemporary. Are those people wrong, not really but if we look at the definition of psychological horror may have a change of heart. Wikipedia.com defines it as this: Psychological horror is a subgenre of horror fiction, film, and video games (as a narrative) which relie[...]

Horror Magazines

As you may know, I work part-time at a brick and mortar bookstore. And no, I won't tell you which one:) Anyway, I was doing a little zoning of our magazines and low and behold, there were these few precious gems among the stacks. You guessed it, there were horror magazines! Of course, I had to flip through and check them out. One thing I found interesting is that there was pop culture combined with old school horror. And monsters galore! Magazine #1: Rue Morgue- The Poe themed magazine caught my eye first. The main focus in this month's installment is the creep[...]

iZombie

There’s a cool new zombie show on the CW called iZombie. The story—adapted by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, originated as a comic published July 2010, by Vertigo—an imprint of DC Comics. If this line up of awesome doesn't get you chanting: Rob Thomas and DC Comics and zombies, oh my! I'd be surprised. And this is NOTHING like any zombie story you've ever heard of. Liv, a talented medical resident who has it all together, attends a fancy party on a yacht. After refusing to take a new drug, the yacht is suddenly under attack by zombies. Liv is scratched[...]

Ghost Hunters

It all began with a Tweet. It's like a whole new world has opened up to me. I never thought there'd be multiple groups in my area who research and hunt ghosts. Actually, you can search for ghost hunters that have set up show in every state. Now, I haven't checked out whether or not I can go for a ride along or not, but I'm considering it. How about you? Would you want to actually go on a ghost hunt?[...]

The Ouija Board

The original Ouija Board, originally created in 1852, when William Benjamin Carpenter analyzed how the original talking boards worked. The toy Ouija board was patented in 1891 by Elijah Bond, Charles Kennard, and William H.A. Maupin. From here, the idea of a talking board grew in popularity and eventually became the Ouija board we know today. In 1973--the year I was born BTW, maybe this has something to do with my love of horror--The Exorcist hit the big screen; changing the fun game into a gateway to hell. This certainly didn't deter people from using one, inst[...]

Research for Horror Writers

Research. A necessary evil in the writing world, yes. Although all writers do research for the same reason--to better the story--there are a few different ways this can be done. For example, if I were to write a book about mythology, I would absolutely have to research so that my facts were correct. That I was writing a story with the correct information. Now, I don't write the type of stories where I need to do a lot of fact checking. But I do research. When I'm writing a horror story, I immerse myself in the world of fright. For my first novel (a NA psychologi[...]

THE THING: A Review

Photo courtesy of IMDB I am and forever will be an 80's girl. Between the clothes, the music, and the movies we had it all. We also had...THE THING! Just like every other 80's movie, THE THING begins with rolling credits and cheesy music. And a flying UFO. Lol! THE THING takes place in Antarctica, winter 1982. There are American and a Norwegian camps who are there to explore. The poor Norwegians think they've made the greatest discovery--a UFO. Little do they know, this will be the death of them all. Leave it to the American crew--lead by helicopter pilot, Mac[...]

A Review of HORNS

From 2001-2011, Daniel Radcliffe was synonymous with the Harry Potter phenomenon. During those ten years, we watched him grow from a boy into a man—one who has since moved on to playing older characters in Rated R movies such as: The Women in Black and Horns. The movie Horns is not your typical horror movie. In fact, it’s really a thriller with some horror undertones. And who better to write the novel that was adapted for the screen, than Joe Hill. For those who don’t know who Joe Hill is, I have two words for you…Stephen King. Joe Hill has made a name f[...]

The Mist

The Mist (2007) The problems all begin with a huge lightening storm. One that I'm sure my hubby would sit outside and watch, but Dave Drayton does the right thing and takes his family to the basement. When morning comes, he finds a lot of damage caused by fallen trees. When Dave and his wife check out the damage of their boat shed, there's a mist coming from the mountain top. In need of supplies, Dave (Thomas Jane) and his son, Billy (Nathan Gamble) travel with their neighbor, Brent to town. It's here that the mist takes over and they find themselves in dang[...]

A Review of Rosemary’s Baby

This week's horror movie review is...Rosemary's Baby (1968). I just happened upon this DVD while looking through the shelves at my local library. It's not like I've never heard of this movie, but I never really was drawn to Rosemary's Baby. Until now. Once upon a time, horror movies would build tension with music and layering the story. Rosemary's Baby does all of these things. I mean, you know in the beginning that something bad is going to happen, but not how. Many horror movies start out with young couple checking out an apartment. Things always begin so n[...]
