Japanese Horror in YA: The Suffering by Rin Chupeco

As I mentioned earlier in the month, it's J-Horror (Japanese Horror) month here at the Midnight Society! Last week I posted about J-horror in young adult fiction. My post featured the fabulous book called The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupeco and I thought it would be fun to continue with my feature! She has another amazing sequel and don't you worry, I'm going to tell you allllllll about it. J-Horror in YA The Suffering by Rin Chupeco Breathtaking and haunting, Rin Chupeco's second novel is a chilling companion to her debut, The Girl from the Well. The darkn[...]

Japanese Horror in YA: The Girl From the Well

When the rest of the crew suggested to do a month devoted to J-Horror, I was like, what? I hate to admit it, but I did not know what J-Horror meant! Thankfully they explained and I was excited! Who wouldn't want to learn about Japanese horror? It was something I didn't know much about. If you don't either, that's okay! The fabulous Amy wrote a post about it just the other day. You may want to start here. You know much I love young adult novels, so I set out to find a few J-Horror inspired young adult novels and I was NOT disappointed. Check it out. Hello J-Horro[...]

Announcing Our New Midnight Marauder: June 2016

It’s time to reveal our next Midnight Marauder! I've read the tarot cards and sipped the divination tea... The answers were identical. It's clear that the spirits and the universe have come to an agreement. They've nominated one special soul for sacrifice. I’m so excited and pleased to announce the first Midnight Marauder of 2016! What the heck is a Midnight Marauder? The Midnight Society’s Midnight Marauder is a member of the Midnight Society team. He or she is someone that goes above and beyond to contribute to the Midnight Society, to our readers,[...]

Young Adult Gothic Literature Reading List

Last week I wrote Gothic Literature – A History, and discussed what the genre is and where it came from. I also recommended a few fabulous books that helped to shape the genre itself. One of the things I mentioned was that the cool thing about Gothic literature, is that it’s still around today, even after hundreds of years, still haunting and thrilling, delighting and scaring. Today I wanted to highlight a few young adult Gothic novels for your reading pleasure!   Above, from left to right, top to bottom. Click on the title to read a little more abo[...]

Gothic Literature: A History

It's Gothic Horror month here at The Midnight Society. There have already been some fabulous posts like Both Things I Know About Gothic Horror I Learned from Jane Austen Who Learned from Ann Radcliffe from Erica Davis and My Favorite Gothics from Jenna Lehne. Today I wanted to talk about Gothic literature and tell you a little more about it. There's so much I could say about this subject, as it includes most of my favorite stories and authors, but for the sake of not rambling, I tried to keep my wits about me. But first, let me share my Gothic lit[...]

Ghost Month: The Tale of Resurrection Mary

The tale of Resurrection Mary began a long time ago, in the 1930's. But first...a little bit about the setting. Resurrection Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in North America. It was consecrated in 1904. Resurrection Cemetery is located at 7201 Archer Ave., Justice, IL 60458 and is said to encompass over 540 acres with over 152,000 graves (which don't include the crypts, which number over 5,000). Here's a screenshot from Google maps for reference. I've heard the residents in the area have a nickname for it... They call it "The Resurrection Triang[...]

Ghost Month: Hotel Del Coronado and the Mystery of Lottie A. Bernard

May is Ghost Month here at the Midnight Society! I love ghosts stories more than a person should. Normally if I talk to someone for more than thirty minutes, I can be found asking if they know any good ghost stories. It's the truth and the rest of the Midnight Society can attest to that! The story I'm here to tell you today is true, and it's a story of murder, heartbreak, and a mystery that still haunts the Hotel Del Coronado today.   On Thanksgiving day in 1892, a beautiful woman checked into the Hotel Del Coronado. She never checked out. The Hote[...]

Halloween Murder: The True Story of The Candy Man

I love Halloween. And thanks to member Erica's genius brain, we're celebrating the build-up to Halfoween, the halfway point to Halloween this year. Faith made these awesome banners for Halfoween and I'm in love. I picture little Dracula bunnies with fangs, hopping around among happy Easter eggs.   Today's story is not a happy one but a true one nonetheless, about a horrific murder that took place on Halloween night in 1974. This story is the cause of many urban legends, parental fears and movie inspirations, to this day. This is the true story of The Ca[...]

Horror House: The Whaley House

There are four things in the world that I love: dogs, iced coffee, scary stories, and haunted houses. Since March is our haunted houses month, I thought it would be fun to highlight a real haunted house in my neck of the woods of Southern California. Meet The Whaley House The Whaley House was built in 1857 by a man named Thomas Whaley. It is located at 2476 San Diego Avenue, in old town San Diego. Its architecture is mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival and has been a museum since the 60’s. This two-story house and store was the first two-story brick edifi[...]
