The Haunted Summer of 1816 and the Origin of Frankenstein

There's not much I love more than haunted things and horror origin stories...well, other than puppies and iced coffee. Being that it is Women in Horror month, I started looking into the origin story of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The history is more interesting than you think. The Year Without a Summer The year of 1816 was known as the year without a summer. In April 1815, there was a volcanic eruption.  The eruption of Mount Tambora (located in present-day Indonesia) was the most powerful volcanic eruption in human recorded history. It is reported that the[...]

Witchy News: A Witch Bottle Was Discovered in Virginia

I have an obsession with buried things. The idea of a found thing long since forgotten. Discovering treasures that have soaked into the soil and become one with the earth. Only to be dug up by curious eyes. There was a headline last week that made my wild heart flutter. A Witch Bottle Was Discovered in Virginia. This happened exactly one week ago. What they found: A glass bottle filled with rusted nails. What they really found: A popular talisman used to ward off evil spirits or evil magic. The Virginia Department of Transportation began widening work on In[...]

Witchy Goodness: Currently Reading The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

I love me some witches, and naturally they came up over the holiday break when I made a Christmas gift list for the witch in your life or when I talked about my failures of 2019. At a book conference in 2018, I received an ARC of it. The cover's deep blue with iridescent writing, the magical description—I was bewitched from the beginning. I was over the moon excited and I devoured it fast. It was my favorite book of 2018. It's still one of my favorites. Which is why I'm reading it again. Have you heard of it? The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw A New York T[...]

2019 In Review: Bookish Goals and All My Failures

As I write this, it's December 30th, 2019. I put on some ambient sounds this morning, curled up with with my cat and a piping hot mug of coffee, and reflected on my year in 2019. I accomplished a lot of what I wanted. I also failed a good amount. I don't usually set New Year's goals, but at the beginning of the year I did. Here's what I said I would accomplish.   My 2019 Bookish Goals: ✔️ Win NaNoWriMo. ✔️ Attend an event as an author. ✔️ Make every single blog post deadline for the Midnight Society. ✔️ Finish another novel and query i[...]

Gift Ideas for the Witch in Your Life (Small Business Saturday Edition)

Thanksgiving already? Where did the time go?! I feel like just yesterday it was Halloween. Okay, who am I kidding? It's because I wish that every day was Halloween. Now, I'm not a huge believer or supporter of Black Friday craziness. I suppose it's because I worked retail for 8 years and I had horrible experiences on Black Friday as an employee. One year, people literally broke into the store that I worked at. They pried the doors open hours before our midnight, when our store actually opened. Another year, employees had to have police escorts to the building bec[...]

Wicked Reads: I Know You Remember by Jennifer Donaldson (Playlist + Drink Inspo)

Crisp leaves and creepy dolls, haunted houses and haunted theme parks, terrifying true Twitter threads like this one, and the fact that it's National Candy Corn day, have me in the mood to share an amazing creepy story that you need to read. I read Jennifer Donaldson's Lies You Never Told Me and I really loved the voice, the fast-pace of the book, and the tricky plot that I didn't see unraveling how it did. I love being surprised by a novel! So when I found out that Jennifer Donaldson had a new book out, I said a big HELL YES, and got to reading! I have a full[...]

She's a force to be reckoned with, so let's dive in!   Thank you so much for joining me, Ally! What kind of books do you like to write or haven you written? I started our writing fantasy and science fiction for middle gra[...]

Horror Author Interview with Leanna Renee Hieber

Autumn brings some of my favorite things...foggy streets in the early hours of the morning, spooky decor, and a chill to the air to remind you that soon, everything will be reborn. It also brings some of my favorite things in the world...horror author interviews! I've talked to and heard about Leanna Renee Hieber's books for a while now. I was hoping she would be a guest on the blog and I was delighted when she agreed. She's not just an author, she's also an actress and a playwright. And honestly, I'm not sure if there's anything she can't do! As of October 201[...]
