Pizza Baby!

Hello!   It's been over a month since I've posted and oh, how I've missed you! This post is a bit of a cheat since I'm not really posting anything, just announcing! I'll be back to the same old next, next Friday, but for today I have two little announcements. First off, I birthed the newest member of the Midnight Society! This little turnip's name is Esmond Matthew :D I'm 100% biased, but that is one cute tiny human. Along with a real baby, there's also a new book baby in my life! Our commander, Jolene, curated a selection of delightful pizza-inspired sh[...]

Explore the Mysteries of the Unknown

We're so spoiled nowadays when it comes to finding information on weird, supernatural and creepy stuff. You can Wikipedia the Amityville Horror, you can watch documentaries about ancient aliens on demand, and there's a podcast for everything from ghost hunting to past life regression. But it wasn't always that way. Back in the '80s, we watched our horror movies on VHS and Time Life Books told us about the Mysteries of the Unknown. https://youtu.be/ftFwtwMKLe0 Thirty-three volumes of paranormal awesomeness. Sadly, I never owned these books when I was a kid--but[...]

Faith’s Favorite Frights #1

Locke & Key is one of my favorite horror comics, ever, so naturally I was super stoked to hear they had a one-shot on the way. According to my local comic seller, who had never read Locke & Key, this is a great way to try out the series and get yourself sucked in if you've never read Locke & Key before. This story came out last week, AND IT'S AWESOME. Even better: in the letters in the back, they say they WILL have a new, seventh volume coming out! And they have plans for more. YES PLEASE! Pick this up at your local comic book store, or get it dig[...]

Demon Week Recommended Read: Mister B. Gone by Clive Barker

It's Demon Week here at the Midnight Society, and I'm happy to recommend a book about a demon from my favorite modern horror author, Clive Barker. The book is called Mister B. Gone, and reading the book is a demonic encounter in an of itself. Mister B. Gone is the story of a demon named Jakabok Botch, a story that the demon himself narrates for the reader. Actually, he's not so much narrating as he is speaking directly to the reader, as if he's there with you, telling you his life story. He is constantly warning you that reading his story will not end well for yo[...]

Interview: Jolene Haley and Brian LeTendre

Hello, Darlings!!   I am SO thrilled to have our very own Horror Twins, Brian LeTendre and Jolene Haley, on the blog today! They graciously let me feast on their brains about their books, both past and upcoming. So I'll stop boring you and just hop right in!   How did you two start writing together in the first place? Brian: I was lucky enough to participate in a few of the Pen & Muse writing showcases (Dark Carnival and Haunt), and I was a big fan of Jolene's because she's such a positive force in the writing community. I asked her to be a gu[...]

Young Adult Gothic Literature Reading List

Last week I wrote Gothic Literature – A History, and discussed what the genre is and where it came from. I also recommended a few fabulous books that helped to shape the genre itself. One of the things I mentioned was that the cool thing about Gothic literature, is that it’s still around today, even after hundreds of years, still haunting and thrilling, delighting and scaring. Today I wanted to highlight a few young adult Gothic novels for your reading pleasure!   Above, from left to right, top to bottom. Click on the title to read a little more abo[...]

Let’s Talk About Books, Ghostie

I love a good ghost story. I mean, who doesn't? Right? (At least in this crowd?) I got to write one ghost scene in my book Liberty Bound, and I'm writing a lot more of them in my upcoming series Brody Undead. There are so many different kinds of ghosts, and so much folklore, leaving so much room to explore! Since it's ghost month here on The Midnight Society, it's the perfect time to explore some of those different ghosts. Here are some haunted reads for your shelves...   My Daylight Monsters was originally supposed to be a stand alone novella, but be[...]
