Cast Away Stones – The Genesis of a Folk Horror Tale

Like most of my stories, Cast Away Stones started as a seed about superstition and ancient practices. Originally, when I set out to write a story based in folklore surrounding winter, I remembered some research I’d done on the Cailleach, an ancient winter goddess associated with the grain harvest in Scotland and Ireland. There was much folklore attached to her, with rural agricultural communities relying upon her for their prosperity. Not only did they worship her and try to keep her happy, they also revered her, believing their very livelihoods, and th[...]

As our newest member of The Midnight Society could not be located for an interview on this, the day of her birth, I took the liberty of conducting it without her. The Davis Girl (TDG): Are you ready to be interviewed, Victoria Nations? Victoria Nations (VN): Yes! This is very exciting! Such an honor to be interviewed by THE The Davis Girl! Rumors of your interviewing prowess are not exaggerated! TDG: Very true. Hello Midnight Society Readers. I am joined today via imagicaffeine by Victoria Nations. Happy Birthday Jenna!

We have a very special birthday today. Jenna, writer extraordinaire, amazing mother, creative genius, lover of Dr. Strand (here here!), concoction brewer, and one of the hardest workers I've ever met has a birthday today! And lucky for us, the whole graveyard turned out to celebrate! Feel free to wish her Happy Birthday on Twitter! Happy Birthday Jenna!     Jenna, you wonder woman, I so adore you. The spirits in the graveyard said it best when I asked then what they thought of you. They did a lot of swaying and said, "Wooooooooooooo!" and I agree.[...]

Happy Birthday Mary Rajotte!

The spirits are swirling in excitement today because one magical person was born today and the universe and its otherworldly entities are celebrating! Happy Birthday Mary Rajotte! We got together with the ghosts and planned a little celebration. Don't forget the Ouija board! Mary, you are so kind, clever, and uber talented! Really, it's not fair to the rest of us but we forgive you. After all, we couldn't live (or haunt) without you. My gift to you is a few relaxation bath bombs from The Mad Bombers. I'm not sure how it works digitally, but you're smart,[...]

Birthdays and Serial Killers and Books! Oh My!

Today is a very special day, because today is the creator of The Midnight Society's birthday! That's right, it's the anniversary of Jolene Haley's entrance to this realm. This lady is relentlessly supportive, so I thought we should celebrate her existence by being supportive right back! One month from now, on September 22nd, you'll be able to read the very first novel in The Woodsview Murders series, Harrowed. It's been cowritten by Jolene Haley and Brian LeTendre (another member of The Midnight Society!) Haven't heard about it? Here are the details: Journal[...]
