Midnight Society Movie Night: The Forest

This month for our Midnight Society Movie Night, I will live-tweet The Forest. Directed by Jason Zada, written by Ben Ketai, Nick Antosca, and Sarah Cornwell, The Forest, an American supernatural horror film, took the screen in 2016. I didn't see this in the theater, slightly worried I wouldn't like it. Not received well, people didn't have good things to say about the movie. Though when it appeared on DVD, I bought it. Not a favorite movie of some and maybe not my very favorite ever, I enjoyed it. Not incredibly scary, I liked the creepiness, the tone, and t[...]

The Empty Places

My job takes me deep in the woods, behind shopping plazas, and to abandoned lots. I visit the places customers and residents don’t see, the places in transition, about to become something new. The wild areas are lush with life and death. The abandoned places are different. Their history clings to them. People leave pieces of themselves behind.  Sometimes only trash.  Sometimes whole parts of their lives. Their presence is palpable, these past people, but the spaces are empty. These are the empty places. I’m drawn to them. I make up their stories, to fill[...]

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl

I started a book, and I haven't finished it yet, but I have to tell you about a girl named Sunshine. The Haunting of Sunshine Girl is a young adult horror book by Paige McKenzie, the first in a series. You can find it on Amazon. Blurb: "Shortly after her sixteenth birthday, Sunshine Griffith and her mother, Kat, move from sunny Austin, Texas, to the rain-drenched town of Ridgemont, Washington. From the moment they arrive, Sunshine feels her world darken with an eeriness she cannot place. Something about their new house is just...creepy. In the days that fol[...]

Kids Need Scary, Too: A Plea for More Middle Grade Horror

We're celebrating middle grade horror this month. So I thought of middle grade me, and if you had asked kid-me if I liked horror, I would have said no. Maybe because Mom was all about the non-scary, about keeping us from things that she didn’t like. Maybe because Dad liked it, but being a not-so-talkative guy, there was never any discussion about it. But when I look back on my childhood, I did like horror. If Dad was watching some crazy, creepy movie, I watched it, the whole time knowing I “shouldn’t”. I had books I loved, only later realizing they were h[...]

Short Horror Films

Short on time? Day job grinding you down? Trying to find two minutes to take a pee break? I know the feeling. Crazy work weeks make for very little time to dose myself with the dark stuff. Some of my favorite things when life gets hectic are short, compacted horror stories and films. Six words stories? Cool. I'm down. Short films that are under twenty minutes to watch? Even better. I've collected a few recent finds to share with you today, and yes, I'm keeping my blather brief. Short Horror Films The Smiling Man You might've seen the other Smiling Man video in c[...]

Horror Inspiration: Look to the Deep

Are you a horror writer looking for the next big thing to thrill your readers? Sometimes all you have to do is look to the deep. I love vampires, ghosts and ghouls as much as the next gal, but I'm always trying to come up inventive ways to give my readers the creeps. When I read about the Cystisoma, a type of crustacean, I felt a tingling in the part of my brain that looks for oddities that could possibly terrify. Okay, so upon first glance, a sea creature that doesn't look much different when compared to a lobster or roach-type thing might not seem scary to[...]
