Sing Your Way to Halloween

At the edge of August, my Halloween alarm rings loud and clear. We're getting into reasonable countdown territory. But who says you have to be reasonable? Start with some karaoke songs to get everyone into the Halloween spirit. Not a singer? These songs will also make a fantastic playlist. Enjoy. Classic Rock “Spooky” by The Classics IV Featured in American Horror Story: Murder House, this is fun for karaoke. “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult The Stand, Halloween, The Frighteners, Supernatural, and Scream all use this song. “Black[...]

Good-Bye True Blood (no spoilers)

Sunday night we said our final good-bye to the cast of True Blood and I can't help but think back to the previous six episodes. Season 1 we saw Sookie and Bill fall in love. It was a sweet beginning in the midst of all hell breaking loose. Season 2 introduces us to Jess, who Bill has turned into a vampire. She has a difficult time dealing with the fact that she's a creature of the night. We also find out Sam is a shape shifter. There's some weirdness with Mary Ann and Jason is hiding out at a church camp.   Season 3 Alcide shows up in all[...]

The Circus is Coming: American Horror Story Freakshow

You may have noticed that in these parts, we're big fans of American Horror Story. I've been smitten with the show since the first time Tate Langdon stalked through the halls of his high school in Murder House with a full face tattoo. I fell in love when he dragged Violet into the bathtub to stop her from overdosing. With season four gearing up for a big release, the Freakshow is coming to town. Rather than rehash everything that's been said about casting, I thought it might be interesting to look at some possible avenues that might be explored this season.[...]

Top 5 SyFy Channel Movies

I love quality scary movies. I love the psychological horrors that make you think for days after. (Snowpiercer is latest one that comes to mind.) Terrors that are layered and stylized and beautiful: always enjoyable. They are like the meat and veggies of my horror diet. But sometimes we just want junk food, guys. Sometimes we don't want a carrot, we want a Snickers. We want empty calories that make us smile and sigh... calories that are almost always followed by an unladylike belch and a tad of self-loathing. And that's where the SyFy Channel comes in. I love[...]

Penny Dreadful- A Review

Let's begin with those freaky spiders in the beginning. I mean, come on! There nothing scarier than a woman praying while a spider crawls down her arm. Of course it would induce a grand eye rolling session! "Unbridled pleasures of youth." Now that sums up dear old Ethan Chandler. He drinks to excess and has sex with a stranger all within the first 10 minutes of the show. Still, he's intrigued by Vanessa Ives and follows her into the depths of an underground Opium den for a job. This all leads to Sir Malcolm, who is in search of his daughter. Cue the[...]

Face Off – Dead & Lovely Inspiration

Special effects makeup wasn't something I necessarily thought I'd be into. I mean, it sounds neat enough, but would I really want to watch a show with people putting on makeup? The answer is apparently yes, yes I would. And not only so I enjoy watching the show, but it continuously inspires me as a writer to work harder and push myself further. And as a lover of the dark and twisty art of the world? This definitely tickles my fancy. The show is called Face Off, and it airs on Syfy (I'll never get used to writing Syfy, by the way. I pronounce it siff-eee, and say[...]

Lights Out – A Spooky Short from the Who’s There Film Challenge

I love being scared. Though I love to read scary books, seeing a scary movie unravel on a screen is one of my favorite things to do. This weekend my best friend Johanna Banana told me that she had a short video I just had to see. Banana is my usual scary movie partner in crime. We watch scary movies together. We hide under blankets on the couch. And we scream appropriately during really scary moments. The gleam in Banana's eyes when she told me she had something for me to see, told me it was something awesome. And I was right. Apparently there was a competition[...]

The Witches of Salem

I'm packing my bags today. Not, as you might imagine, because I've been accused of doing something insidious and I need to get out of dodge, but because I'm hopping on a plane tomorrow and heading to Boston for a week for work. Given my proximity to several creepy things, including Salem, I figured it might be prime opportunity to open up the floor for discussion on the latest television show to jump on the horror bandwagon. We've seen the haunted house and asylum aliens a la American Horror Story, we've got the zombies in The Walking Dead, we're even taking a c[...]

Creature Feature: Aliens, Do you believe?

Do you believe in aliens? If you are any part human, you have at least wondered about the existence of extraterrestrial life. Maybe your idea of alien lifeforms are cute and cuddly, ala E.T. Or perhaps something more along the lines of the monster from the movie Alien. Maybe you gravitate toward the idea that other planetary life might simply consist of plants and micro-organisms. Whatever the case, the possibility that a being who is not human could occupy the universe is both intriguing and chilling. This is what makes alien books, movies, and TV shows so inter[...]

Penny Dreadful

The Midnight Society loves a good creepy movie, so when I first saw the preview for the new Showtime Original Series Penny Dreadful, I knew I had to share. The geniuses behind the show have taken the dark and twisted characters from classic tales like Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and Dracula. Set in Victorian London, this series looks like it will bring on the creepy darkness of all our favorite horror characters--with a huge twist. I have a feeling this series will be a huge hit! Harry Treadaway, plays Dr. Victor Frankenstein--he needs no introduction.   T[...]
