Horror Houses: A Recap

Have you noticed that we have been enjoying some monthly themes over here on The Midnight Society? March's theme was Horror Houses. Let's take a look back at what we came up with...   Amy kicked things off with a look at the movie MONSTER HOUSE. Horror Houses: The Garbage Disposal That Messed Me Up for Life, a post where I talk about frightening garbage disposals and the weird things that scare us and stick. Mansions of Madness: Clue for Grown-Ups where Timon tells you what you need to be playing! Seriously, we all need more horror games in our lives, e[...]

Horror Houses: Cabin in the Woods

Believe it or not, The Midnight Society did discuss whether or not a cabin was the same thing as a house. It was unanomous that a cabin could be considered a house--technically--which is why I'm posting about one of my favorite horror flics. Why? It's perfect in every way. See what I mean? From the trailer you can see that not only is Cabin in the Woods bloody, but there's also a little science fiction mixed in there. And it's all rounded off with some nakedness, a dash of humor, scary monsters, and campy horror tropes. What else could you ask for in[...]

Horror House: The Whaley House

There are four things in the world that I love: dogs, iced coffee, scary stories, and haunted houses. Since March is our haunted houses month, I thought it would be fun to highlight a real haunted house in my neck of the woods of Southern California. Meet The Whaley House The Whaley House was built in 1857 by a man named Thomas Whaley. It is located at 2476 San Diego Avenue, in old town San Diego. Its architecture is mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival and has been a museum since the 60’s. This two-story house and store was the first two-story brick edifi[...]

The Haunted House on Oak Hollow Drive

'ello Midnighters, Today is Easter, for those celebrating--congrats. (Do you say congrats for this? Idk.) For those who don't celebrate, you probably knows this better as the time with the remarkable, truly remarkable, reese's peanut butter shaped-eggs. They are remarkable (if you hadn't gotten that from the first two remarkable, the third one will have to drive the point home). Now, since we have a Haunted Houses theme this month, I want to share with you a creepy fable with bunnies, because it seems fitting. Haunted House. Bunnies. Stuff. Now, onward to the st[...]

Tingles of Terror: ASMR Horror Stories

If you've ever gotten a relaxing, tingly feeling while getting your hair done, having your eyes examined or listening to someone speak softly, then you have experienced ASMR--Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. It's a very calming sensation, and for many people, can be helpful in dealing with stress, anxiety, insomnia and more. Not everyone experiences ASMR, but if you are someone who does, there is an entire community of YouTubers are creating content designed to trigger that sensation. As the ASMR community has grown over the past few years, the content ha[...]

DIEmonds in the Rough: Night of the Demons (1988)

It's Horror House month here at the Midnight Society, so I just had to do a DIEmonds in the Rough on one of my favorite '80s horror flicks--Night of the Demons. Not only is it a b-horror classic, it's a nice twist on the usual haunted house movie. Because as Angela states when things start to go wrong: "This house is not haunted...it's possessed." In Night of the Demons, a group of kids decide to have a Halloween partry at Hull House, an abandoned mortuary. When party organizer Angela convinces the group to conduct a seance, they summon forth demonic spirits tha[...]

The Horror House of Dr. Who

This month we are celebrating horror houses, and since it's also my day to show you how my favorite science fiction show crosses into horror, I've combined the two. I give you one of my favorite Dr. Who episodes, written by Neil Cross, airing in April of 2013...   Setting...1974, Caliburn House, a huge, creepy mansion at night during a thunderstorm. Our cast... Professor Alec Palmer, ghost hunter. Emma Grayling, psychic. Clara Oswald, a hesitant explorer, constantly turning to find nothing behind her. The Doctor, who thought finding a ghost[...]
