A Childhood Horror House

When we decided as a group to write about horror houses this month, my thoughts immediately went to the old delapidated structure that I used to explore as a kid. Back before there were computers, cable TV with eight million channels, Playstations, and cell phones, I had the woods surrounding my house as my sole source of entertainment. Limited technology aside, we knew how to use our imaginations and this run down house/barn was the perfect place to dream it all up. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to explore in a structure that was probably condemmed, but wh[...]

How to Make YOUR House a Horror House

This month we're talking horror houses here at Midnight Society (as you've probably already noticed...). Personally, I've always wanted to live in a house of horrors. My ultimate goal is to someday live in a haunted castle in Scotland even. But if you're like me and currently can't purchase that expensive, yet gorgeous, haunted castle (or home) then here are a few tips for summoning the undead to turn your current home into a horror house. The Come Here Ritual I'm taking these fun and freaky rituals from Saya Underworld, which means I cannot directly copy a[...]

Creepy Comics: Carnage

I am a big comics fan--I've been hosting a comic podcast called Secret Identity for ten years now with a buddy of mine. Being a lifelong horror fan as well, I'm always on the lookout for a decent horror comic, and it's rare that I am genuinely surprised by one. Which is what makes marvel's new Carnage series such a pleasant surprise. I love Spider-Man, and have read many a spider-related title over the years. For those that don't know, Carnage is the fusion of an alien symbiote and a serial killer named Cletus Kasady. He's one of Spider-Man's most dangerous and[...]

Happy Birthday Timon! Let’s Party!

Good Morning, Kittens!   What a beautiful day to be alive. Speaking of being alive, one of our very own is celebrating a birthday today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TIMON!!!   Since I'm relatively new to the Society, I asked Kim to help me out with a little birthday bio for Timon . I was going to sum it up for you, but I love the way she described Timon, and I think he'll like it too: He is a southern boy, born and raise. Catholic. God loving. Very smart dude. Loves horror. Currently in grad school to make horror video games ideally. Loves philosophy, and big[...]

Book Review: THE STUMPS OF FLATTOP HILL by Ken Lamug

Ken Lamug's THE STUMPS OF FLATTOP HILL brings a long-overdue disturbance to the picture book arena. The cover alone promised me things that I was desperate for the story to keep. And keep them, it did. THE STUMPS OF FLATTOP HILL is an otherworldly cautionary picture book in which dear little Florence accepts a dare to face perils unknown but ends up Doing Something Else And That Is All I Will Say On The Plot Because Reasons. If you want more, go here or here.  What I love about Lamug's storytelling is that it's done in fluctuating rhythm[...]

Mansions of Madness: Clue for Grown-Ups

March's theme is horror houses and I finally get to talk about my all time favorite board game. The one, the only Mansions of Madness. The set-up is you play as one of the investigators from the Arkham Horror universe or as the Keeper, who controls the eldritch forces trying to stop you. You'll explore mysterious locations from mad scientist labs to mysterious, foreboding... um, mansions as you rush to solve mysteries of cosmic proportions. As the player, you move from room to room, exploring, finding items, falling into traps, and uncovering clue[...]

The May Queen Murders Exclusive Content + Interview

I'm beyond excited to have one of my favorite new authors on the blog today, Sarah Jude. When I first heard of her book, The May Queen Murders, I flipped out. It sounded amazing. Something that I didn't know I was waiting to read. And then I saw the cover and it was perfect. Let me share more... The May Queen Murders by Sarah Jude easily fits into the overlapping worlds of horror, suspense and romance. More freaky than gore, it’s not the usual fright-fest and instead pulls from Ozark lore that builds in tension as the secrets of traditions are unearthed. Sat[...]

March #MidnightBooks: The Thief of Always by Clive Barker

You guys--I am so excited. Clive Barker is my favorite modern horror author. One of the many things I love about his stories is how he blends dark fantasy and horror together to create wildly imaginative worlds. The Thief of Always is Barker's version of a fairytale, a story that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages, but also is dark enough for mature horror readers. If you liked Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, or Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, I think you'll love The Thief of Always. Synopsis Mr. Hood's Holiday House has stood for a thousan[...]

Let’s Watch a Horror Movie…Leprechaun

Hello, horror lovers. It's me, your scary movie buddy. I love watching shows that send me racing up the stairs at the end of the day, that cause me to leap into bed to avoid the reaching claws of whatever lurks underneath. And I am happy to watch by myself, because I have to, because no one here has any interest. But I sure do love sharing the experience with friends, with those who enjoy the creepy as much as I do. Which is why once a month I live-tweet a horror movie. And a few of us are having a super good time. It is horror/haunted houses month here at The[...]
