I

Hello, lovelies! Sorry for the lame title but I can't think of any other way to express my fondness for middle grade horror. I LOVE it, and not just because I write it. There's something so magical about scaring kids. I remember hiding in the back shelves of the library, pouring over SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK. I was hooked on the shivers and the adrenaline I felt coursing through my veins when that girl's sore split open and spiders went ALL OVER HER FACE. When I read IN A DARK, DARK ROOM (and other scary stories), I became obsessed with the story, "Th[...]

Good Morning, poppets,   I have something SO exciting for all of you today. My critique partner and friend, Jessica Bayliss, is revealing her cover! Jessica is unfathomably talented. Turns out the book I was remembering was Jessica's most recent story I had the privilege of beta-ing!. She is THAT good. ^^^ This is a Jessica ^^^ And now onto the goods!   Broken Chords by Jessica Bayliss Genre: YA Horror (novella) Release dat[...]

Call Me, Maybe?

Hello, Ghosties...   As I write this, my dogs are standing at the top of my stairs, peering into the basement. The short, coarse hair along my boxer's spine is rising, strand by strand. My Shepard is letting out low, throaty growls. I could get up, but nothing is at the bottom of the stairs.   At least nothing I can see. **Trigger warning - deceased children** Anyhoo, like most people, I often fall asleep with  my phone nearby. My husband jokes around that I'll be buried with it. The more I think about it, the more I realize that I wouldn't have it[...]

My Big Fat Haunted House

I'm writing this not only to remind myself that it's true, but also for posterity's sake...in the case it doesn't stop. It started shortly after we moved in. I don't want to say what "it" is, mostly because I honestly don't know. It began with a subtle scrape. Like the sound of a shovel being drug across concrete. It started at night - always after twelve, always before 3. Scrape. Scraaaape. Scraaaaaaaaaaaaaape.  At first I was the only one that heard it. I'd nudge Matt awake but by the time he had his wits about him, the noise stopped. I had visions of an alb[...]

Pizza Baby!

Hello!   It's been over a month since I've posted and oh, how I've missed you! This post is a bit of a cheat since I'm not really posting anything, just announcing! I'll be back to the same old next, next Friday, but for today I have two little announcements. First off, I birthed the newest member of the Midnight Society! This little turnip's name is Esmond Matthew :D I'm 100% biased, but that is one cute tiny human. Along with a real baby, there's also a new book baby in my life! Our commander, Jolene, curated a selection of delightful pizza-inspired sh[...]

Twas the Night Before….

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with flare, In hopes that a parent would put shit in there.   The children were nestled all snug in their beds, Without a clue of the coming dread. You see, they were naughty, horrible brats And something was scurrying about aside from the rats.   When out on the lawn something landed with a splatter, So I sprang from the bed to see a sleigh shatter. Away from the window I flew like the Flash, To[...]

Horror Origins: Krampus

Hello, my little Christmas Kittens!   I'm so excited that it's finally December. I feel like my year doesn't start until September - at least the good parts. We get Thanksgiving (Canadian here) Halloween, and then it's Christmas! I fucking love Christmas. I love shopping and eating cookies and hanging out in my jammies. I'm SUPER pregnant so I'm hoping I don't calve before then haha. Wish me luck! Anyhoo - this has a point. It's Horror Origins month here at the Midnight Society, so I chose this week's blog based on one old bad ass...Krampus. Sorry Jolene,[...]

The Rugaru

Hello, darlings....   How are you all doing? I know the post-election craze has a lot of people in a funk (to say the least). I'm Canadian and even my small news stations are still covering the potential vote audit and other political stories from your neck of the woods. I can't imagine how overwhelming it must be. If you need gifs or someone to vent to, I'm here. Oh! And you've just had Thanksgiving - if you're partaking, Happy Thanksgiving! If you're NaNo-ing, your word count is probably getting up there. Great job! Keep on going! I know it's tempting to[...]

I’ll sleep when I’m dead

Hello, lovelies.   I wanted to write a post about NaNo, but I'm tired. So tired. My kid is in the throes of what's called a sleep regression. It's this brilliant stage in a child's life where they decide, "Hey, fuck this sleep thing. I can survive on mere hours a day." It's a glorious time for all parties involved. *Giant pause because a motherfluffing mouse just ran by. It may be time to reconsider the humane traps* Anyhoo - I'm not getting a whole lot of Z's these days. As you can imagine, I'm a total treat. I started researching signs of sleep deprivat[...]

The Subtle Art of Impaling

Hello, lovelies!!!   Happy Friday before Halloween! Past Jenna would be marinating skittles in vodka right now and piecing together a road map of debauchery. Present Jenna just picked out matching Halloween costumes for her husband and son and is already scoping out hiding spots for leftover candy. My, how things change. This past week has been all about Vampires! I love me some Vampires. Like many others, good old Twilight started me on my writing path, though I do prefer my vampires to be of the non-sparkling variety. So! What shall we talk about? Famous[...]
