Howdy, horror fans! It's me, Kathy! I am thrilled to announce my choice for our Midnight Book Club read for April! I am super-dee duper excited to read MARY: The Summoning! And then I shall attempt to host the Twitter chat where we can talk about all the creepiness. AND WAIT THERE'S MORE...the author, the fabulous Hillary Monahan, has accepted my invitation to join us for our chat. So we can ask all the questions and quite possible fangirl a bit too much. Which is completely acceptable and not at all weird. So join the fun and read MARY: THE SUMMONING. And a HUGE[...]

The May Queen Murders Exclusive Content + Interview

I'm beyond excited to have one of my favorite new authors on the blog today, Sarah Jude. When I first heard of her book, The May Queen Murders, I flipped out. It sounded amazing. Something that I didn't know I was waiting to read. And then I saw the cover and it was perfect. Let me share more... The May Queen Murders by Sarah Jude easily fits into the overlapping worlds of horror, suspense and romance. More freaky than gore, it’s not the usual fright-fest and instead pulls from Ozark lore that builds in tension as the secrets of traditions are unearthed. Sat[...]

Curious Things Found on the Internet – Part III

So. This post was planned a few weeks in advance. More on this in a sec; largely because it has to do with where I am when this post goes live. (Delays on comment responses will be inevitable, I'm afraid.) With The Forest's recently released, there's been a spike in talk about Aokighara Forest in Japan -- the setting in which the movie is based. You might have heard of it before, as it is featured in Kendare Blake's follow-up to Anna Dressed in Blood: the sequel to the series, Girl of Nightmares. Maybe you're a fan of Atlas Obscura (I sure am) and came across[...]

Hearing Horror

Hello, Kittens!   I had originally blocked off this post for a review of the incredible novel HOUSE OF LEAVES, but I am nowhere near being finished. Now I'm a pretty speedy reader, but this novel is a delightful chore. For starters, it's a book within a book, about a film that doesn't exist (or does it??). Confusing, eh? I'll try and explain. The first book starts with an introduction. The narrator is a hot mess. He finds a book, which becomes the second story being told. THAT book describes a film (our narrator has never heard of / doesn't exist) and the[...]

Read Harder Horror

Book Riot put out its 2016 Read Harder Challenge just before the start of the new year. I did last year's challenge and found it great for expanding my reading. While the point of the challenge is to read widely, I'm offering a tailored version for the horror aficionado. Read a horror book Blood Kin by Steve Rasnic Tem Read a nonfiction book about science The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence by Gavin de Becker Read a collection of essays Lovecraft and a World in Transition: Collected Essays on H.P. Lovecraft by S.T. Joshi Read aÂ[...]

Curious Things Found on the Internet – Part II

Hello guys and ghouls! This, being the second in the series of Curious Things Found on the Internet (you can read the first here), I'm running with a literary theme this week. The way this works: I offer up an interesting tidbit found in my internet travels along with a book pairing inspired by the oddity, as well as a drink to go with it. Without further ado, let's get to it: 1. Popular Writers: A Stephen King interview In which Neil Gaiman interviews Stephen King. This is an older interview, dating back to 2012, but if I haven't already overstated it: both[...]

Must Read: Fright Before Christmas + a Free Story!

I am always looking for ways to horrorize any holiday. This can obviously be displayed by the horror writing and illustration showcases I’ve run for Pen and Muse, for Halloween or Christmas or just because. I put out a horror publication called Halloween Night: Trick or Treat this last October. I’ve also written a few of my own. Can you tell that I love horror short stories? Recently, I heard about a new anthology coming Leap Books and I was SO excited! It’s called Fright Before Christmas: 13 Tales of Holiday Horrors. What is even cooler, is that there's[...]

Zombies, Not Just Mindless Brain-Eaters

Welcome to zombie week! I hope it's been fun for you and no un-dead have wandered out of a cornfield to eat you for dinner. If you're reading this, I guess you're safe, but stay vigilant! I have to admit that I'm not a huge zombie fan...ghosts and demons are more my jimmie-jam. Watching the un-dead saunter along the street hoping to catch and eat people never thrilled me. But I'm hopping on the zombie train because I have discovered something. Zombies can be more than mindless creatures hobbling out of the trees. This revelation struck when I read... Zombie[...]

When Beatrice Thompson’s body is found in the girls’ bathroom, Avery has her biggest story ever.
