Happy Halfoween!

April is officially the halfway mark until our favorite holiday...HALLOWEEN! Of course, this is a cause for celebration and what better way than to begin planning a huge Halloween extravaganza? There are a plethora of websites dedicated to DIY Halloween projects--from the easy to the extravagant. I created three Halloween Pinterest boards for those who are ready to begin planning.   Follow Kissed's board Halloween Lawn Decorations on Pinterest. I remember seeing someone post a photo similar to this from New York. It doesn't matter where you li[...]

Horror Houses: Cabin in the Woods

Believe it or not, The Midnight Society did discuss whether or not a cabin was the same thing as a house. It was unanomous that a cabin could be considered a house--technically--which is why I'm posting about one of my favorite horror flics. Why? It's perfect in every way. See what I mean? From the trailer you can see that not only is Cabin in the Woods bloody, but there's also a little science fiction mixed in there. And it's all rounded off with some nakedness, a dash of humor, scary monsters, and campy horror tropes. What else could you ask for in[...]

A Childhood Horror House

When we decided as a group to write about horror houses this month, my thoughts immediately went to the old delapidated structure that I used to explore as a kid. Back before there were computers, cable TV with eight million channels, Playstations, and cell phones, I had the woods surrounding my house as my sole source of entertainment. Limited technology aside, we knew how to use our imaginations and this run down house/barn was the perfect place to dream it all up. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to explore in a structure that was probably condemmed, but wh[...]

Monster House

HAPPY March! Since it's the first day of a new month, I get the disctinct honor of being the first to post on our new theme...horror houses! Now, I do have a pretty good memory of one particular scary house from my childhood, but I'm saving that one for later on. Today, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite scary kid movies. Sony created an animated horror where the main character is a haunted house, which scared my kids when they first watched. I will admit that I LOVED watching their reaction, too!     My favorite line? "If something[...]

Heart-Shaped Box

I can find no better way to say good-bye to the month of love, than the work of Kurt Cobain and Joe Hill. Hill (son of my favorite writer of all time--THE Stephen King), wrote a horror novel titled the same as the smash hit from this grunge rock band. The slaying tune is the perfect match for Joe Hill's horror hit. Although the only thing shared is the title, I can imagine rocking out to this while reading. Can't you? So for those who love horror...give it a try and celebrate the end of February with a good scary story.   Aging, self-absorbed rock star[...]

Till Death Do Us Part- Horror Weddings

When celebrating Valentine's Day, one often things of romantic dates and even weddings. Of course, any wedding we might feature would have to be horror themed. I've created an awesome Pinterest board and filled it with amazing ideas for a horror themed wedding. Here is one of my favorite pictures from my search: I found that some brides and grooms go all out and paint their faces to look like zombies, while others focus on creating a creepy atmosphere. There are so many ideas out there, so instead of posting them all here check out the board I created. It migh[...]

The Deadly Couples of BtVS

When we talk about undead couples quite a few come to mind, but you know my mind often wanders to anything Joss Whedon or BtVS related. I'd be remiss if I didn't talk about my favorite couples from Buffy. First there was Buffy and Angel. Now this romance was doomed from the beginning--a vampire with a soul, who is cursed to become a demon again if he ever experiences true happiness meets the vampire slayer of his dreams. And one romantic night turns everything to hell. Literally. http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/buffy-summers/images/32094812/title/angel-buffy-wall[...]

Bloody Valentine Gift Giving

I'm all for love and everything, but there are so many types of gifts you could give your loved one this year. Rather than the typical gifts of chocolates or flowers, I think the best way to celebrate is with some bloody gifts and a horror marathon. The internet is full of great gift ideas, so if you're in the market for some fun...check these out. GIFTS FOR HIM cafepress.com How about a great shirt for your guy? What could be better than buying him a shirt to represent the show, Dexter?             Everyone can use another[...]

Outrunning Zombies

Alright, the idea for this post comes from a comment our very own Jolene made to me on Facebook. For those who haven't yet friended us, here's what was said: Amy: Got a short run in today. The snow made everything so pretty! Jolene: Look at you running! I only run if I am being chased. I've always said this very thing. That running was only useful to get away. I'd even laugh about being one of the first people to die in an apocalypse, because even the zombies would be able to catch me. Not. Any. More. I can't yet run far or very fast, but[...]

Writing Bloody–Pitching Your Story

So, you're writing a horror story? Can you tell me about it in a sentence or two? That is a question that freaks out even the most seasoned writer. So, how do you pitch a horror story? The same way you'd pitch any other story, except you need to make sure you represent the conflict between the protagonist and antagonist. Here are my top 5 pieces of advice when pitching: Prepare This is a test. Not really, treat it as though you're studying for a test. Even though this sounds obvious, without preparation you may become too nervous to really take advantage of th[...]
