‘Tis the Season for Imaginary Friends

There's just something about this time of year that makes you feel like a kid again. Am I right? Dreaming of a white Christmas. Seeing Santa at the mall. The Christmas lights. Presents under the tree. Candy canes and Rudolph and Silver Bells and running down the stairs Christmas morning. It's nice. Really.     But today I'm not bringing you stories of holly jolly children who made Santa's "good" list. Nope. I'm here to share some creepy kid stories, because that's what we do here at the Midnight Society. We crush those sugar plums that dance in you[...]

My Phobia

Here at The Midnight Society we talk a lot about fear. Some of us are afraid of clown, while others fear moving doll parts. What we haven't talked about are phobias. First of all, what exactly is the difference? A fear is the response to a real and true threat. Fear is something you can overcome. Phobias are more intense, anxiety causing, and sometimes a extreme irrational fear of something that poses very little actual threat. These little buggers aren't so easy to get over. I have a phobia and it's called Lilapsophobia--fear of tornadoes/storms. While my hus[...]

There and back again: Facing fear in real life

I write horror. This is the usual response I give people (delivered in a flat tone, because it's hard to gauge how they'll respond) when people ask what floats my boat. I've been met with a variety of reactions, but the most frequently recurring are the following: You must watch a lot of horror movies. I do, but I'm a chicken. I often won't watch them alone, and I would prefer to have someone burly next to me whose shoulder I can cram my face against during the scary parts. I often have trouble sleeping for weeks afterwards. You must have some strange stuff in yo[...]

Fear and a Winner!

Fear. It's what glues us to our seat during a scary movie. But if we are truly scared, why watch the movie? Why read the book? Well, it's all about the chemicals in our brains. I guess we're funny that way. Literally. When we are scared, our brains produce the same chemicals as when we're happy. So if you ever wondered just why you enjoy that feeling of dread and anxiety...that's why. Over the years, my fears have changed. I went from being scared of dolls, to a fear of clowns (Coulrophobia). I have to say I'm glad I'm over that one, what with my favorite show h[...]

Creepy Music Playlist

Okay, so Christmas music is already, shall we say, around. And you might know that I am a Christmas music lovah through and through. But this is October, right? This is the month for creepy, not jolly. For scaring, not caring. Fine. I admit it. I've listened to a carol or two recently. But whatever, my point is it's time to break out the creepy music playlist. I've compiled some spooky tunes. Haunting and chill-inducing were my criteria for making the cut. Take a listen and see what you think. Note: If you watched America Horror Story: Freak Show last night,[...]

Jack the Ripper, Identified After 126 Years

Yep, you read that right. According to this very extensive article from The Daily Mail, an amateur sleuth, an expert in DNA and genetics, and 7 years of exhaustive work have cracked the case that has baffled detectives and historians for over a century. If you're a die-hard CSI junkie, you HAVE to read this article. But for those who want the short version (but how can you call yourselves horror fans, and not read the article about Jack the Ripper?!?!?!), here it is... You might have watched the movie 'From Hell' with Johnny Depp: And maybe you've pictured thi[...]

Spine-Tingling Real Life Horror Stories

Not too long ago, while on Facebook (the place where I find an absurd amount of creepy things) my eyes caught on a story someone shared. The headline gave me chill bumps. It read: Man Receives Facebook Messages From Dead Girlfriend. Have you guys read this story? I feel like you might have. Well, I knew it was fake, right. But that didn't stop me from clicking the link... and reading the insanely long story full of screen caps and semi-convincing pictures. I have to say, by the end of that story, my heart was pounding like a jackhammer on steroids. Just the mere[...]

DOLLS- A Great Scary Movie

I've made it no secret that clowns use to scare the living heck outta me. My teenage son got me over this fear by having clowns chase me at our local amusement park. Poltergeist is yet another movie I watched that build up a huge fear of clowns, but I never talk about my fear of dolls. DOLLS, a horror movie from 1984, definitely has a lot to do with my childhood fear of dolls. This is yet another movie I watched at my next door neighbor's house (also saw POLTERGEIST here in 3rd grade). In the '80s, you could get illegal cable using what we called a "black box."[...]

Disturbing Web Finds #2

My journeys through the www have led me to some truly creeptastic things. My wide-eyedness prompted the first 'Disturbing Web Finds' post, and I'm happy to report, there are many more freaky finds where those came from. Honestly, I'm not sure how I run into these stories. It's totally not on purpose. But since I do, I figure it's only fair that I share the creepay creepay with all of you. I'm gracious like that. You're welcome. :) First, we have this video (which I found on Facebook) of a praying mantis dying. But the thing that made my stomach knot up, flip, cl[...]
