Horror Ripped From the Headlines

We are constantly bombarded by horror in the news, whether it be about the latest movie or war. It's ever present in the headlines and on social media. Trust me, you don't have to go far to read something scary. Last week in fact, a local coroner had mechanical difficulties with the back door of his vehicle. And dead body strapped to a gurney fell out onto a busy street. You heard me. Rolled right out into oncoming traffic! Can you imagine being the car behind him on the road? Talk about real life scariness! I'd be freaking about possession and locking my car doo[...]

Oh the Things You Can Google

We've all Googled things for our WIPs that could cause the police to investigate us. Right? I mean, currently writing a novel about a serial killer has definitely had me searching some questionable content. Like--which vein makes a person bleed out faster? Yeah, that'd get me locked up for sure. But recently, I searched for something out of pure curiosity. My friend, who knows I want heads for my office--don't ask. It's a thing. Found these for me at her neighbor's yard sale.   I know. Kinda freaky but I can't wait to clean them up. Like I did to this on[...]

Writing Horror- A Pep Talk

I am a huge Stephen King fan. I enjoy reading his stories and watching his words come to life on the big screen. But the real reason I have so much regard for Mr. King is because of his ability to take himself and writing so seriously. A few years ago I read his book on the craft of writing aptly named, On Writing. If you haven't read this yet, I implore you to get a copy now. Seriously. I've recently come back to read some advice he gives--because honestly, sometimes writers need to give themselves a good ol' pep talk. Reminding yourself once and a while abo[...]

Horror Movie Remakes

I was flipping through my TV channels the other night and came upon a remake of Psycho. It got me thinking...there have been many remakes of famous horror movies. All of which are really well done; however, I still like the original movies better. Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates? He plays a total creeper, but I still think the original version is scarier. A remake of Carrie? A Stephen King classic? I know many people have truly enjoyed this version, but I can't see Carrie as anyone other than Sissy Spacek! My teen loves horror flicks, so I've chaperoned many[...]

Horror Movie Fun

I had so much fun searching for a few new horror movies to watch. Here's what I picked up from my public library to help me get over my BEA hangover: Slither When I saw that Nathan Fillion stars in this film, I had to see it. He often chooses campy films to be in, so that's what I expect with this flick. http://youtu.be/2-f8wU6Fpeo The Thing I've really been into watching older horror films...they're usually very scary. http://youtu.be/5ftmr17M-a4 Shutter Island Leo DiCaprio is soft on the eyes, but from what I've heard this movie is scary. You have all the rig[...]

BEA Spotlight: Holly Black

I am a HUGE fan of Holly Black. In fact, when I saw a friend of mine come out of the convention hall of BEA last year with an ARC of The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, I just about lost my mind. Luckily, she is wonderful and went back in to find me a copy. This is my favorite Holly Black story yet! This year, Holly has two signings and I plan to be at both of them. I am so excited to get my hands on The Darkest Part of the Forest. I mean, look at that cover! BEAUTIFUL! The Iron Trail, one she co-authored with the amazing Cassandra Clare is sure to be awesome too! I[...]

Penny Dreadful- A Review

Let's begin with those freaky spiders in the beginning. I mean, come on! There nothing scarier than a woman praying while a spider crawls down her arm. Of course it would induce a grand eye rolling session! "Unbridled pleasures of youth." Now that sums up dear old Ethan Chandler. He drinks to excess and has sex with a stranger all within the first 10 minutes of the show. Still, he's intrigued by Vanessa Ives and follows her into the depths of an underground Opium den for a job. This all leads to Sir Malcolm, who is in search of his daughter. Cue the[...]

Horror Writer Interview #5- HEATHER MARIE

Welcome to the latest edition of our Women of Horror interviews. This week's spotlight is on Heather Marie. Let me tell you, I've read THE GATEWAY THROUGH WHICH THEY CAME and LOVED IT!!! I'm thrilled to introduce her here, because I have no doubt that you will be hearing about her more and more. Enjoy! 1.  What does the word “horror” mean to you?   Anything that entails giving someone a fright. Something twisted or menacing that makes someone tremor at the thought. It's not always about shock factor for me, but rather an idea—that[...]
