Write for me….

Hello Kittens,   I want to play a game.     I've auditioned for a few IP projects lately. While none of them have panned out, writing something that was spawned in someone else's brain has resulted in a huge boost in my creativity. So much so, that I want to try it out with you. Yes, you, sitting there, idly reading this post, perhaps on the train on your way to work. I want you to create your own twisted, demented little story off the following prompt. I will think of something fantastic to send my favorite contributor. **Spoiler alert - i[...]

Halfway There

Hello Kittens!   Happy Halfoween! In honor of this spooky celebration, here is one of my favorite kill scenes, from one of my all-time favorite movies, Thir13en Ghosts. (It's not Halfoween if someone isn't getting bisected) While I was drumming up ideas for my blog post, I kept thinking of the fact that we're halfway to Halloween. It might just be me, but I feel like everything is "halfway" lately. My kid is always halfway clean. I'm halfway done the laundry (meaning it's sitting in the washer, slowly drying). My jobs are halfway done at work. The bottle[...]

Hello, Kittens!   I have a surprise for you all! So you guys obviously know how much I love podcasts, specifically The Black Tapes If you haven't listened to The Black Tapes before, head over to their website and check it out. It is awesome. In fact, I love it so much I may or may not write Alex/Strand fanfiction. (Spoiler alert: I totally do). So it gives me immense pleasure to welcome Alex and Nic to the blog!! First off, I'm dying to know how have your lives changed since you’ve started delving into the paranormal? Are you more weary of the sounds c[...]

Happy Birthday Timon! Let’s Party!

Good Morning, Kittens!   What a beautiful day to be alive. Speaking of being alive, one of our very own is celebrating a birthday today! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TIMON!!!   Since I'm relatively new to the Society, I asked Kim to help me out with a little birthday bio for Timon . I was going to sum it up for you, but I love the way she described Timon, and I think he'll like it too: He is a southern boy, born and raise. Catholic. God loving. Very smart dude. Loves horror. Currently in grad school to make horror video games ideally. Loves philosophy, and big[...]

Undying Love.

Hello Kittens,   Well, the month of love is almost gone. I've eaten more than enough chocolate, but there won't be much of a break in that department...my supermarket is already full of mini eggs and chocolate carrots (arguably the best kind of carrot). I've thought a lot about what I wanted my post to be about...I revisited some of my favourite horror ships (Cat and Casper, anyone??), dwelled on flicks that show us real love (ODD THOMAS, *happy sigh*), but I wasn't feeling the urge to write about any of that...While I wanted to stick with the theme of lo[...]

Real Life Horror: Publishing

Hello Kittens,   Boy, have I had a week. I'd tell you all about it, but I really don't want to turn this into a big pity party. I've done enough sulking. So instead of whining about my life, I thought we could chat about real life horror...in publishing! Now, I know that a lot of you out there are just like me; Agentless (as of a week ago #frown) and wading through the cold, dank query trenches. Querying is terrifying. Sending your words out into the world to be judged at face value is enough to give me the chills in the middle of August. But you know wh[...]

February #MidnightBooks: Shallow Graves by Kali Wallace

Here at The Midnight Society, we love debut authors! Let's welcome Kali Wallace to the published world by discussing Shallow Graves. Synopsis For fans of Holly Black and Nova Ren Suma, a gripping, hauntingly atmospheric novel about murder, revenge, and a world where monsters—human and otherwise—lurk at the fringes. When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hidi[...]

Hearing Horror

Hello, Kittens!   I had originally blocked off this post for a review of the incredible novel HOUSE OF LEAVES, but I am nowhere near being finished. Now I'm a pretty speedy reader, but this novel is a delightful chore. For starters, it's a book within a book, about a film that doesn't exist (or does it??). Confusing, eh? I'll try and explain. The first book starts with an introduction. The narrator is a hot mess. He finds a book, which becomes the second story being told. THAT book describes a film (our narrator has never heard of / doesn't exist) and the[...]

Horror from around the Globe: Aokigahara

Hello Kittens,   I hope your holidays were delightful. My better (but far less scary) half got me a nest for Christmas, so I spent a ridiculous amount of time in my papasan chair, colouring in my Sherlock book and reading, swaddled in fluffy blankets and wearing a frog onesie. It was majestic. Now that the holidays are over, it seems we're getting a delightful pile of fresh new horror. flicks We kicked it off with KRAMPUS, and have THE BOY coming out soon, which looks awesome. But the one I'm most looking forward to is THE FOREST. THE FOREST is about Aok[...]

Six

Hello Kittens,   I remember the first time I set foot into the land of Twitter. There was a hashtag going on, one I thought was absolutely brilliant. #SixWordStories People from all over the world were tweeting their stories, a good chunk of them plays on perhaps the most well known six-word-story of all time: Like...come on. Hemingway is so good he can slaughter your soul in six effing words. He is such a legend. The idea of a six word got me thinking about how important words are, and how we sometimes use way more than we should. I know that my own fi[...]
